*MOUNTAINS AND RIVERS .*

SANJAYA speaks to Dhritarásht́ra.--Hear me, monarch, in reply to your
inquiries, detail to you the particulars of the country of

Bhárata.  Mahendra,

Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimat , Gandhamádana, Vindhya, and

Páripátra are the seven mountain ranges:

as subordinate portions of them are thousands of mountains; some unheard
of, though lofty, extensive, and abrupt; and others better known, though of
lesser elevation, and inhabited by people of low stature:

 there pure and degraded tribes, mixed together, drink  of the following
streams:

 the stately Gangá, the Sindhu, and the Saraswatí ; the Godavari,

Narmadá, and the great river  Báhudá ; the Śatadru, Chandrabhágá, and

 great river Yamuná; the Drishadwatí , Vipáśá , and Vipápá, with coarse

sands; the Vetravatí, the deep Krishńaveńí, the Irávatí  Vitastá ,

Pavoshńí , and Devíká ; the Vedasmritá, Vedavatí , Tridivá ,

Ikshumálaví , Karíshińí, Chitrabahá, the deep Chitrasená, the Gomatí,

the Dhútapápá, and the great river Gandakí ; the Kauśikí, Niśchitá ,

Krityá, Nichitá, Lohatariní , Rahasyá, Śatakumbhá, and also the Śarayú ,

the Charmanvatí, Chandrabhágá , Hastisomá, Dis, Śarávatí , Payoshńí,

Pará , and Bhímarathí , Káverí  Chulaká , Víná , Satabalá, Nivárá,

Mahitá  Suprayogá  Pavitrá , Kuńd́alá, Sindhu , Rajání , Puramáliní,

Purvábhirámá, Víra, Bhímá , Oghavatí, Paláśiní , Pápáhará, Mahendrá,

Pát́alavatí , Karíshińí, Asikní, the great river Kuśachírá , the Makarí ,

Pravará, Mená , Hemá, and Dhritavatí , Purávatí , Anushńá , Saivyá,

Kápí , Sadánírá , Adhrishyá, the great river Kuśadhárá , Sadákántá ,

Śivá, Viravatí, Vástu, Suvástu , Gaurí, Kampaná , Hirańvatí, Vará,

Vírankará, Panchamí, Rathachitrá, Jyotirathá, Viswámitrá , Kapinjalá,

Upendrá, Bahulá, Kuchírá , Madhuváhiní , Vinadí , Pinjalá, Veńá,

Tungaveńá , Vidiśá , Krishńaveńá, Támrá, Kapilá, Selu, Suvámá ,

productive of abundance, besides hundreds of inferior note, are the

rivers of Bhárata, according to remembrance .

of the different countries, They are the Kurus, Pánchalás , Śálwas,

Mádreyas, and dwellers in thickets (Jángalas), Śúrasenas , Kálingas ,

Bodhas , Málás , Matsyas, Sukut́yas , Sauvalyas , Kuntala

]Káśíkosálas , Chedyas , Matsyas  Kárúshas , Bhojas , Sindhupulindas ,

, Aparakáśis, Játharas, Kukuras, Dasárńas, Kuntis, Avantis , Aparakuntis

Pánsurásht́ras, Goparásht́ras, Karítis  the people of Adhivájya, Kuládya ,

Mallarásht́ra  and Kerala  the Varápásis , Apavárhas, Chakras ,

Vakrátapas and Śakas , Videhas , Mágadhas , Swakshas , Malayas  and

Vijayas ; the Angas  Vangas , Kalingas  and Yakrillomas, Mallas ,

Sdellas , Prahládas, Máhikas and  Śaśikas , Báhlíkas , Vát́adhánas ,

Ábhíras and Kálajoshakas , Aparántas , Parántas, Pahnavas ,

Charmamańd́alas , Atáviśikharas and Merubhútas , Upávrittas,

Kakshas dwellers on the sea-shore, and the Andhas and many tribes

residing within and without the hills; the Malajas , Mágadhas ,

Mánavarjjakas ; those north of the Mahi (Mahyuttaras), the

Právrisheyas, Bhárgavas , Puńd́ras , Bhárgas , Kirátas, Sudesht́as; and

the people on the Yamuná (Yámunas), Śakas, Nishádas, Nishádhas

Ánarttas ; and those in the south-west (Nairritas), the Durgalas,

Pratimásyas, Kuntalas, Kuśalas  Tíragrahas, Súrasenas, Íjikas ,

Kanyakáguńas, Tilabáras, Samíras, Madhumattas, Sukandakas,

Káśmíras, Sindhusauvíras Gandháras, Darśakas, Abhisáras Utúlas ,

Śaiválas , and Báhlíkas ; the people of Darví the áńavas, Darvas,

Vátajamarathorajas, Báhubádhas , Kauravyas, Sudámas Sumallis,

Badhnas, Karíshakas, Kulindápatyakas, Vátáyanas , Daśárńas ,


Romáńas , Kuśavindus, Kakshas , Gopála-kakshas , Jángalas,

Kuruvarńakas , Kirátas, Barbaras, Siddhas, Vaidehas  Támraliptas ,

Audras , Pauńd́ras , dwellers in sandy tracts (Śaiśikatas), and in

mountains (Párvatíyas). Moreover, chief of the sons of Bharata, there

are the nations of the south, the Drávíras , Keralas , Práchyas ,

Múshikas  and Vánavásakas ; the Karnátakas , Máhishakas ,

Vikalyas and Múshakas , Jillikas , Kuntalas , Sauhridas, Nalakánanas ,

 Kaukut́t́akas , Cholas , Kaunkanas , Málavánas , Samangas, Karakas,

Kukkuras, Angáras , Dhwajinyutsavasanketas , Trigarttas , Śálwasenis,

Śakas , Kokarakas , Prosht́as, Samavegavasas There are also the

Vindhyachulukas , Pulindas and Kalkalas , Málavas , Mallavas ,

Aparavallabhas, Kulindas , Kálavas, Kunt́hakas , Karat́as , Múshakas,

Tanabálas , Saníyas , Ghatasrinjayas , Alindayas , Paśivát́as , Tanayas ,

Sunayas , Daśívidarbhas , Kántikas , Tangańas , Paratangańas,

northern and  other fierce barbarians (Mlechchhas), Yavanas , Chínas,

Kámbojas; ferocious and uncivilized races, Śakridgrahas , Kulatthas,

Húńas, and Párasíkas; also Ramańas , Chínas, Daśamálikas , those

living near the Kshatriyas, and Vaiśyas and Śúdras ; alsoŚúdras ,

Ábhíras , Daradas , Káśmíras, with Pat́t́is , Khásíras
