Love and friendship

Diotima is a name found in the works of the Greek philosopher Plato. This
Diotima of Mantinia was also a philosopher. His philosophical vision is
unique. Take for example this argument he makes. A thing does not have to
be extremely clean or extremely impure. It cannot be said that something
that is not white must be black. Between the two extreme positions lies a
little-explored space. Personalities can exist between God and humans.
Reality is in the eye of the beholder. It cannot be said that what I feel
is what you feel.'

Diotima explores in detail what it means to love another. The love of a
higher power appeals to him more than the love of men for their fellow men.
This love transcends the physical. Diotima says that it is possible to
express such high love to fellow human beings.

Some later researchers say that Diotima's beauty, intelligence, and energy
are unbelievable. She is probably a fictional character and they firmly
believe that such a woman could never have lived in reality. They argue
that Plato must have created Diotima to give a side to his philosophical
dialogues. But not only Plato but also his teacher Socrates mentioned
Diotima. He calls Diotima not just a woman philosopher, but a teacher who
taught me. In particular, Socrates mentions that he learned from him the
philosophical investigations of love. This love is not a physical love that
blossoms between people, but an inner love. That means friendship.

This friendship is called platonic relationship or love. Accordingly,
intellectual and emotional love between a man and a woman is possible. This
affection is not love. Here a man's body and a woman's body lose their
importance. Both are united by love. They love each other dearly. A
platonic relationship overturns the age-old belief that friendship is
impossible between a man and a woman.

Why is it said that male-female friendship is not possible? Mary
Woolstonecraft's late 18th-century answer to this is not only simple but
important. A man has never considered a woman as his equal. Woman was
judged to be subservient to man and less worthy than man. The male was
given the headship in the family. Society was ruled by men. They were in
power. In religion, philosophy, art and literature, men were at the top.
Friendship is possible when a man considers a woman as another life like
me. When you start thinking that you are below me, friendship starts to
break. A man and a woman cannot be united in friendship because the feeling
of dominance and friendship are not connected.

Diotima the Conversant

That is why Diotima is not discussing human love but a love beyond that. It
was Diotima who introduced male-female friendship, now known as the
Platonic relationship, as a philosophical inquiry for both Socrates and
Plato. Socrates mentions that I learned the philosophy of love or affection
from Diotima in my youth. Diotima plays an important role in Plato's
philosophical explorations. Diotima influenced two such great philosophers.

Diotima subjects not only friendship but also love to serious scrutiny. He
says that love means poverty and immense wealth at the same time. We are
all looking for love. Can we seek something we don't have? So can it be
said that those who seek love, beauty and romance are unloving,
unattractive and unloving? Can love blossom in poverty? On the other hand,
love fills this void. It gives love. Gives beauty. Gives mass.

Makes the have-nots have everything. Brings pleasure and happiness. Then
love is definitely wealth.

Love is always poverty. It wanders without a place to stay. That's why we
crave love from our loved ones. That's why we run after it aggressively and
aggressively. At the same time love removes the absence and brings beauty
and bliss. Diotima says that love is the child of both poverty and wealth.
It is always flowing from one to another, he says. Love, beauty, happiness,
love, friendship whatever you seek, you fly between poverty and wealth.
You're looking for what you don't have. At the same time you are giving a
part of yourself.

Friendship can be exchanged like love can be exchanged. Let's exchange
ideas. Ideas can be exchanged. Like love, a platonic relationship binds a
man and a woman in a true relationship. This relationship unites those who
are opposites. Starts a conversation by consolidating negative thoughts.
This relationship fills the void. Sharing what is abundant with another.
Balances contradictions and allows harmony to blossom.

If such a relationship as Diotima dreams of is to occur between man and
woman, the equality that Mary Ulstonecraft refers to must first be
possible. Top-down conversations and exchanges only serve the needs of one
party. A conversation is healthy only when both men and women stand on
equal footing. Only then can dialogue begin and subsequent exchanges will
be mutually beneficial and enjoyable for both. Equality must be the basis
not only for love and friendship, but for all relationships between a man
and a woman.

How to live safely in a man's world? Not only outside the house, but also
inside the house can not be without fear! Has the world been like this
since the beginning? Is this how my mother and her grandmother and her
grandmother ended up living in fear and hiding for generations? Should the
women who come after me end up living like this? The Warlbiri tribal women
living in Australia for centuries have struggled with these questions for a
long time.

They had strong reasons to fear men. Since time immemorial, men have been
understood and associated with violence. The stories and examples that were
told to them along the way helped to increase this understanding. Since men
were the center of power, the fields of law, justice and family order were
naturally under their control. They were responsible for correcting wrongs
and punishing wrongdoers.

Australian tribes

Tribal men had some clear methods of punishing erring women. These are
methods developed with the understanding that women cannot be made to
understand anything by using violence. The body is scratched with a knife
according to the fault committed. If the blood and pain are not enough, the
knife is driven into the body even more forcefully. A spear can also be
used instead of a knife. It helps with deep wounds. A popular custom was to
throw a spear through the upper arms. It is also normal to remove a small
portion of flesh from the body.

It is not known what are the crimes committed by women who are punished
differently. It is also unclear how it is decided when to scratch, when to
cut, and especially when to throw a spear. The men of the tribe believe
that by seeing the women under punishment, other women will not commit the
same mistakes. Injuring is not enough, killing is better,

There were those who thought that. The death penalty is carried out by
brutally crushing the skull.

The tribal women were shocked to see these tortures taking place before
their eyes. They feared men because anyone could suffer these punishments
at any time. It is impossible to live without making mistakes. There is no
definite grammar of what is wrong. Even something so spontaneous and so
natural that men get it so wrong. So mistakes cannot be avoided. If you
want to escape from punishment, you must escape from men. What can be done?

One day they accidentally discovered a great truth. A woman cannot escape
men. But women can escape. They learned that our strength is greater if we
join together rather than as separate beings. A woman can easily be dragged
into the street by a man and can be scratched with a sword. But women
cannot be made to do so. Not only males but also males hesitate when
gathering in groups. When they tested this empirically, they were
successful. Buoyed by this victory, they brought their strategy into a
solid shape.

They built a separate women's tent. Women who fear men are welcome here.
This tent will provide protection to women who fear that they have made a
mistake. Even those who have done wrong. Soon the tribal women built this
tent as a structure. The tabernacle sheltered those who fled in fear of
punishment. The beings who did not want to live in the human world began to
live in groups in the tent.

This construction was called by the name Jilimi. Men are not allowed inside
or near this construction. Men have to avoid that route and take another
round route if they have to go to a place through Jilimi. If it is the law
of the male world that men can punish women as they please, the law of the
female world is that men should not punish women. Men should respect
women's laws just as women should respect men's laws. Men respected it.

Jilimi began to grow. Women who have lost their husbands, abandoned women
and those who have already been victims of violence occupy this tent.
Married women also came here for some time and talked their hearts out,
lived independently and then went home. Sick women and women from foreign
lands took refuge in Jilimi. In other words, those who did not accept the
world of men and those who were rejected by the world of men united in
Jalimi. Women saw firsthand how weakness turns into strength as individuals
gather into groups. The lost confidence was somewhat restored. That moment
when they realized that if there is a world for men, there must also be a
world for women.

Love And Friendship Differences and Similarities

We all have been faced with the highs and lows of love and friendship one
time or another in our lives. Love and friendship can bring you a life full
of contentment or a life full of sadness, there are many aspects to love
and friendship. Love and friendship can be like a beautiful garden of
flowers you really don’t have the words to describe the beauty. As you get
closer, you will discover it comes with hidden thorns and thistles called
covetousness, enviousness, resentment, and the green-eyed monster all of
these decreases your love and friendship. We can argue love and friendship
is what makes us compassionate, and love and friendship bring us together
and creates happy memories. “When Love speaks, the voice of all the gods,
Makes heaven drowsy with the harmony” (Shakespeare, Love Labor’s Lost). Love
and friendship cover a multitude of faults it is the glue that keeps family
and friends together, even though the love of many waxes cold.” Love alters
not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out even to the edge of
doom. If this be error and upon me proved, I never writ, nor no man ever
loved” (Shakespeare, Sonnet 116). Love is a strong emotion. It is a wide
array of feelings directed towards another person or object. It can pertain
to personal attraction in the case of people in a romantic relationship and
attachment in the case of family and friends. It is the foundation of
interpersonal relationships that are built between family, friends, and
partners.

The Interplay of Love and Friendship in Relationships

Love Speaks in the name of Friendship: Friendship is a feeling of love and
affection of one person for another. This feeling of love must be
reciprocated. Otherwise, friendship cannot be possible. Friendship does not
exist where tastes, feelings and sentiments are not similar. The famous
essayist Bacon has warned against the friendship between a very rich person
and a very poor person. Economic disparity damages friendship. Thus,
friendship is a feeling of affection between two likeminded persons of
uniform status. It is said that a friendship in need is a friend in deed.
There may be man friends at the time of prosperity. But most of them desert
at the time of adversity. We can examine the sincerity of a friend during
our time of hardship and trouble. Only a sincere and faithful friend
remains with us at the time of our trouble. All others leave us. It is very
painful when our friends turn traitors. Money is an enemy of friendship.
Everybody has an attraction for money. When lending or borrowing of money
is done between two friends, there is great risk. Friendship may be
affected. So it is wise for true friends to avoid monetary transaction.
Vanity is another element which breaks friendship. Everybody has
self-respect. When a person tries to criticise his friend, their friendship
is affected. So, friendship must be treated very delicately. Friendship is
a special kind of love, more than true and more than endless. So if you
have your friends, take care of them, and treat them like a treasure. A
famous philosopher Euripides once said, “Friends show their love in times
of trouble, not in happiness”. The presence of friends makes our life
worthwhile but it is really difficult to write a good friend who will be
with us in all the circumstances of life. Friendship is one of the most
important and valuable things in our life. It measures a good person. A
relationship is love and appreciation being shared between two people while
at the same time they are indulging themselves in each other’s lives. A
relationship is a connection between two individuals whether it is mother
and child, male and female, or friend and friend. A relationship can be
defined as something sacred, something meant to be shared between two
people over a period of time. In the essay “On Friendship” written by
Francine Du Plessix Gray she gives her perspective on the relationship
between men and women. “Friendship is by its very nature freer of deceit
than any other relationship we can know because it is least affected by
striving for power, physical pleasure, or material profit most liberated
from any oath of duty or of constancy” this is a quote from Francine Du
Plessix Gray. She believed that there wasn’t any such thing as true love
that with love you get a false sense of what’s real. Varying opinions and
conflicting perspectives can quickly lead to disagreements and animosity
between people.

Historical Perspectives on Love and Friendship

Close-Knit Loving Bond:

Relationships and friendships have evolved significantly over the
centuries. Quality of life was influenced by accepted practices related to
theories of love and friendship. Exploring Medieval Europe and modern day
approaches to relationships provide a clear illustration of how
relationships have positively evolved over time. Theories of love and
friendship have emerged from the early medieval period over 2000 years ago
with notable theories from Plato and Aristotle. Plato was an ancient Greek
Philosopher and pivotal figure in the history of western thought. Plato
developed the idealist concepts of love theory and defined Eros. Two major
psychological theorists on love and relationships today are Zick Rubin and
Robert Sternberg. Zick Rubin, a modern day psychologist theorizes that love
is made up of three different categories.A close-knit loving bond between
two people can begin with a friendship. Whether it is a friendship between
two males, two females, or one male and one female, these friendships will
develop into love. In no way is it a romantic love, but this type of love
connects and bonds friends. Friends may move away or friendships may wane,
but the love between the two people burns on forever. Romantic love is a
love that not every person will experience. It is a type of love that is
not there at the beginning, but grows within the individual. When one
finally finds the love they have been looking for, one cannot imagine life
with anybody else.

The Dynamics of Romantic and Platonic Love

Love the Conqueror of All:

Love, friendship, sympathy and likeness – these feelings are the brightest
moments of our life. They become the source of joy and positive energy but
can become the reason of big problems and disillusionment at the same time.
It’s important to know the notions of these feelings and their
characteristics to avoid possible mistakes. Very often lack of knowledge in
this field can lead to misunderstandings and finally to poor or even tragic
consequences. Sometimes people mix love and friendship or love and passion
or sexual attraction. All these feelings are important and reflect
different aspect of our life but not all of them are enough to create a
family. For non-professional it’s hard to give appraisal of such notions as
love and friendship.

*Challenges in Distinguishing Love from Friendship*

Professionals also don’t share common opinion on this subject. Bruce King
in his book Human Sexuality Today compares love and friendship finding
differences and similarities. Both feelings – love and friendship closely
correlate and interact, as they possess a lot of common characteristics.
First of all love and friendship is relationship, which requires time,
effort and many other characteristics, which form mutual relationship.
Both, love and friendship assume emotional involvement, care, respect and
devotion. Both feelings undergo transformations with the flow of time and
go through different stages. You can have several friends but situations of
being in loving relationships with several people are very rare and are
regarded rather like deviation, than something normal. This is one of the
differences between love and friendship. Another incontestable difference
between love and friendship is sexual attraction. Friendship usually
doesn’t assume any sexual attraction at all and most forms of love (in the
context of relationship between people who are in love) include sexual
attraction. Love can be reciprocal or not, and in this field, it’s
expressed more like an attitude. It’s hard to imagine reciprocal
friendship. It either exists or not. Friendship is rather a relationship,
which emerges on the joint of several spheres i.e. emotional, mental, and
physical, etc. Like we could make sure, it’s hard to explain the notion of
love or friendship.

The Coexistence and Significance of Love and Friendship

Love is an emotion or feeling in a relationship between two people. Love is
directed to a family member, a friend, a significant other, a country, or
an ideology. It involves a deeper level of attachment, which can be felt
towards everyone without needing to establish any kind of relationship.

A NEW ANGLE:

உடுக்கை இழந்தவன் கைபோல ஆங்கே

இடுக்கண் களைவதாம் = நட்பு

ஆனால், தானே உடுக்கையாய் மாறி விட்டால்??? = காதல்!

Udukkai izhandavan kai pole aangu

Idukkan kalaivathaam natpu tirukkural

While giving the dress is friendship, self becoming the dress is LOVE.

Covering the shame is friendship; undressing is love.

* ஆடை கொடுப்பது = நட்பு Giving the dress is friendship

* ஆடை ஆவது = காதல்      becoming oneself as dress is Love

Both are developments and may not be the same; there are lines drawn.
