Even now, if one were in good faith, they may consume 5 L for simple works
including plain roof and do regular pujas through the locals and maintain.
5L can be collected from all around that place, say 10000 each. As there is
no vimana and all AGAMA rules will ot apply; but will be as good as a
temple as we see in the USA. K R IRS 101224

PULIKKUNNIL SASTHA TEMPLE-PANDALAM

Dear friends,

Today my posting is about Pulikkunnil Sastha temple. The temple is about
7KMs north east of Pandalam palaces. Some nostalgic memories came to me on
watching youtube channels about the temple yesterday.

The temple will be crowded during Mandalam and Makaravilakku periods by
pilgrims from Tamilnadu, Andhra ,Karnataka etc. states. Pilgrims from the
local area called Pananagad, will have their pilgrimage after visiting the
temple.

The temple got the name because Manikanta/Ayyappa rested for some time in
this hill, while bringing tigers to milk them for curing the Pandalam
queen’s decease.

The hill is slightly steep, now steps are provided with cement plastering.
Hand rails are provided.

The deities are Sastha, Vettaikkorumakan and Lord Siva. The old temple has
revived from the year 1962. Before that it was a deserted temple. The re
construction would have completed in 3-4 years.

During the initial period of revival for about a year I was associated
with the temple. Those interested to read my nostalgic recollections can
read further.

A local committee formed with head person called Panangad Krupp took a
decision to revive the temple with pujas on Saturday, while reviving the
temple. It was decided to call Thazhamon thantrhi from Chengannur to start
poojas. Food for thanthri and rest was arranged in my Periamma’s home.

*An assistant was required*. Periamma came to my father. Finally she could
get permission for sending me on the day. I was studying my degree course 1
st year. I had to prepare Nivedyam and assist him other works. The main
thing was carrying water for abhshekam etc from a pond down the hill.

After bath in the pond, applying holy ashes we two carried water in pots
for Abhishekam etc. 2nd pot and 3rd pot if necessary I had to carry in the
rough granite stones making a way. I was given as dakshina Rs 5-00 and
Thantri was given 20-00, it was in 1961’s.

Some member will come from Thazhamon illam, poojas performed on Saturday
one time. For about a year I continued assisting the Thanthri. Then, I had
to study more and I informed my inability. My periamma had to go with her
sons disposing property to Kottayam.

All efforts to dig a well in hill top and find water failed. Probably now
water may be pumping from the pond.

Now too the temple has no roof top. Sastha is in one partition, other
deities in another partition. The temple is daily opening. New priests
would have been posted now. It is a private temple. Main income is hundi
collection during Sabarimalai season and contributions from the local
public.
