There are a couple here who will not request the group for an
answer, but having criticised all and every one as they liked, would raise
an issue in a negative manner and so they would get the answer for which
they need not thank. That also makes them so intelligent to grasp without
being noticed. Instead of raising questions as if they learned, would it
not have been better, if any research were conducted to verify and deliver
the material for understanding and for a discussion also? I wrote about
Kandiyur obviously because I was aware of it as it is our neighborhood with
relatives who were once pannayars at Papanasam, swamimalai and Kandiyur
apart from Budalur, Nannilam and sduraikkayur. Today it is 40 miles away
by roads. My great grandmothers (sisters) will walk starting in the
morning.from Swami malai , go and meet her relatives at Kandiyur and return
back by evening on the same day. They did 80 miles today in one day. Once
when it became dusk, while walking across a forest, thieves not only took
their ear studs but also hand chained them, together, so it was difficult
to walk together but came back my father used to say. Can any one say
walking across in a day 80 miles may be improbable? I am not going to argue
about ayodhya thus; but should have read well before concluding like Max
muller! A LEGEND IS A 1 STORY 2 WHICH MAY BE TRUE OR NOT. wHO WROTE IN
SANSKRIT RAMAYANA AND MAHABHARATA ARE LEGEND? AN ERRONEOUS WRITING AS WORD
'"HINDU" BY BRITISH, ALSO "LEGEND " IS ERROR PRONE IF MEANT THE ITIHASA OR
EPIC OR EVEN A PURANA.
Itihāsa (इतिहास) (*iti-ha-āsa*) literally ‘so it was’ and Purāṇa
literally ‘old’ are almost synonymous, and these terms are found associated
with each other in the early literature. *The word Itihāsa may become a
saying, proverb rather than a legend.* In this sense the words Gītā; and
Gāthā; were also used. Gāthā; need not necessarily be sung and means only a
proverbial verse. In the extant literature, the terms Itihāsa and Purāṇa
have acquired a distinct use. Itihāsa may correspond to an epic and Purāṇa
to a series of narrations, without the main porp of a running tale, meant
solely to explain cosmological and theological tenets.

The Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata are found to be the original epics. The
compiled, revised and researched forms of these two have originated the new
tradition of epics. As per Jayakishan Khandelwal’s reference, amongst both,
the Ramayana is more poetic while the Mahabharata is more historic and less
poetic. Hence, the Ramayana is the father of decorated epics. That is why,
Kamban wrote poetically while Villipururar wrote with a power riding his
verses. Discover the meaning of *itihasa* in the context of Kavyashastra
from relevant books. Itihas ("so indeed it was") as defined by Amarakosha
(I.6.4) refers to purvavritta, i.e. events of the past. In the Vedic age,
those portions of the Brahmanas which narrated events of bygone days were
known as itihasa and had some ritualistic importance. The recitation of the
itihasa-purana in the pariplava nights was a part of the Ashvamedha ritual.
Later, the connotation of the term widened to cover all such narratives
which related to past events.

ON THE CONTRARY WESTERN CULTURE DEFINED ON PAR WITH THE ILIYAD GREEK
MYTHOLOGY BRITISH MADE EVERYTGHING EXCEPT BIBLE AS THE WORD LEGEND A STORY
MAY OR MAY NOT. BUT THE WORLD OVER THE BIBLE WHICH IS NUMBER ONE ON THIS
EARTH, WAS/IS CRITICISED.RIPPED BY THE WEST AAUTHORS THEMSELVES AS FARCE.
HOWEVER, EPICS THAT HAPPENNED ARE PROVED BEYOND DOUBT. AND WEST MADE A
DEFINITION AS FOLLOWS SO WEST HAS A STORY BUT NO HISTORY AT ALL!

Itihasa.— legendary lore. J Note: *itihāsa* is defined in the “Indian
epigraphical glossary” as it can be found on ancient inscriptions commonly
written in Sanskrit, Prakrit or Dravidian languages.
