atTirumanacheri ,Mayiladuthurai District in Tamil Nadu. At least in Tamil Nadu,

Introduction

Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple is  situated at Thirumanancheri in 
theMayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the famous places to 
visit.Thirumanancheri Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord 
Shiva,revered here as Udhvaganathar, alongside his consort Kokhila Amman. 
People from far and wide visit thetemple, particularly those facing marriage 
delays or seeking blessings for ahappy marriage.

Legend  of Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple

The term Thirumanancheri means 'place of marriage', whichdirectly alludes to 
the divine union believed to have taken place there.According to the legend, 
Shiva and Parvati engaged in a celestial game of dicethat escalated into 
aquarrel. In a moment of anger, Shiva transformed Parvati into a cow and 
senther to Earth. Regretting his actions, he sought the assistance of 
LordVishnu to restore Parvati to her original form. Vishnu took on the guise of 
a cowherd to protect his'sister.' He subsequently lifted the curse at a 
location called'Thiruvaduthurai'. In thisplace, Parvati lived as the daughter 
of Bharatha Muni.

 Eventually, Lord Shivaapproached the sage to request her hand in marriage. The 
sage consentedjoyfully, and with the blessings of Lord Vishnu and other 
deities, Lord Shiva remarried Parvati here, giving rise to the 
nameThirumanancheri.

History of KalyanaSundareswarar Temple

Thirumanancheri Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple was constructedby Sembiyanman Devi 
during the Chola dynasty and is recognized as one of the276 Paadal Petra Shiva 
Sthalams, celebrated in the early medieval Tevaram hymnscomposed by the Tamil 
Saivite saints Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar. 

The temple is counted as one of the temples built on thebanks of River Kaveri. 

Thiruvaduthurai Adheenam,a prominent religious institution, has been 
maintaining the temple since theearly part of the 13th century.

Architecture ofKalyana Sundareswarar Temple

The temple is renowned for its exceptional Dravidianarchitectural style. The 
striking feature of this temple is the five-tieredgopuram at the entrance, 
adorned with vibrant and intricate carvings. CholaQueen Sembiyan Madevi 
constructed this temple. The God and Goddess in thistemple are present as a 
newly married couple in the south prakaram of thetemple. There are lots of 
other idols as well. You will find 9 temples andshrines in the temple. There 
are sacred trees in the temple named Vanni andKondrai. There are lots of God 
idols that you can worship in the temple. 

Main deities

In the sanctum sanctorum,Lord Shiva, represented as Sri Kalyanasundarar, stands 
alongside his consort,Goddess Parvati, depicted as Kokilambal, in a pose 
symbolizing their marriage. 

There are elaborate sculptures that depict various scenesfrom the union of Lord 
Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the temple walls.

Sub deities 

Separate shrines are dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Lord Muruga. The temple 
complex featureshalls and corridors supported by intricately carved pillars, 
showcasingdetailed carvings, inscriptions, and stucco images. Additionally, a 
sacred tankknown as Kalyana Theerthamis present, where devotees traditionally 
bathe before entering the temple.

Poojas

 The temple conductssix types of daily pujas: Usha kalam, Kalai Santhi, 
Uchikalam, Sayaratchai,Irandam Kalam and Arthjamam. Special pujas like Ambal 
Abhishekam (7:SantoshiPuja is performed between 7:30 PM to 10:30 PM and 
Kalyanam Pooja (marriagepooja) is performed between 12:30 AM and 8:30 AM.

Specialty

The Kalyana Sundareswarar Temple is particularly famous forits 'Kalyana 
Pooja,'a special ritual aimed at individuals seeking a life partner, as it is 
believedthat the divine couple bestows blessings for prompt and successful 
marriagesupon those who participate in the puja and receive the prasadam. Each 
year,especially during the auspicious months of Thai and Maasi, numerous 
visitorsare drawn to this site.

Festivals

 The temple also hostssignificant festivals such as Maha Shivaratri, Karthikai 
Deepam, Navratri, andArudra Dharshanam, attracting devotees from across India 
who comes to offertheir prayers to the Divine couple.

The temple hosts the three-day Chithirai wedding festival of the divine couple 
in April andMay, creating a magnificent ambiance in the area. Many devotees 
flock tothe temple during the auspicious months of Thai and Maasi for the 
KalyanaPooja. 

A significant number of devotees visit during the Pradosham days each month 
andthroughout the Aadi season. 

Celebrations for Thiruvadhirai in December and January, Navaratri, 
Vijayadashami,Thirukkarthigai, and Aruda Darshanam are held with great 
splendourat this location.

When planning a visit to the Kalyana Sundareswarar temple inThirumanancheri, it 
is recommended to adhere to modest clothing that coversyour upper arms and legs 
as a sign of respect. Men are encouraged to wear adhoti or pyjama paired with 
an upper garment, as well as formal trousers andshirts. Women may opt for a 
saree, half saree, or churidars. It is advisable torefrain from wearing 
contemporary attire such as mini-skirts, low-waist jeans,shorts, and sleeveless 
tops while on the temple grounds.

Non-Hindusare welcome to explore the temple complex and appreciate its

nearest railway stationsto the temple that are 11 Km, and 26 Km away from the 
temple. These stations offer extensive trainconnectivity to various cities, 
including Chennai, Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari,Pondicherry, Mysore, 
Mayiladuthurai, Trichy, Bhubaneswar, Madurai, Coimbatore,Tirupati, Bangalore, 
and Thirunelveli. 

Additionally, busservices, as well as private taxis are available to 
Thirumanancheri from Kumbakonam,Mayiladuthurai, and Thanjavur.

Significance

It is a shrine of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, ShivaSthalams glorified in the 
early medieval Tevaram poems by Tamil SaiviteNayanars Tirugnanasambandar and 
Tirunavukkarasar.[2] The temple is counted asone of the temples built on the 
banks of River Kaveri.[5]

Pray to Selva Ganapathy: As you enter, look to the left ofthe main shrine. 
Selva Ganapathy is there. First, make your prayers to Him.

Pray to Shiva andMeenakshi: Next, pray toShiva, then proceed to the Amman 
Sannidhi on your right. Here, Meenakshi Ammanwill appear in the form of a young 
girl called Kokilambal.

Kalyana SundareswararSannithi: Walk to theleft from this site and view the 
Kalyana Sundareswarar temple. Light the gheelamps in front of this deity. 
Meenakshi is depicted in the form of a marriagedesign on the floor. This is the 
traditional post-marriage practice by allwives.

Standing Pose: Ladies should stand to the right side of theirhusbands during 
prayer times.
