Today my posting is about the ancient temple dedicated toLord Shiva located at 
Chengamanadvillage in Ernakulam district of Kerala. The main sanctum sanctorum 
iscircular, and here LordShiva is worshipped as Kirathamoorthy.

The annual 10 days festival is celebrated with arattu onThiruvathira asterism 
in the Malayalam month of Dhanu (December - January). Sarkara (jaggery) 
Nivedyamis the most important offering here. 

Chengamanad Temple is situated on Mala-Aluva Road. The temple is only 3 kms 
from theCochin International Airport. Angamaly and Aluva Railway Stationsare at 
distances of 7 kms and 10 kms from this place.

Poojas

The Chengamanad Mahadeva Temple offers several daily andspecial poojas 
(rituals) dedicated to Lord Shiva and other deities. Theseinclude Ganapathi 
Homam, Karukahomam, Mruthyunjayahomam, Usha Nivedyam,Ethruthapooja, Sheeveli, 
Pantheerati pooja, Uchapooja, and Uchasheeveli.Additionally, special poojas 
like Rudrabhishekam and Ashtottara Archana areperformed, and various offerings 
such as Vellanivedyam (white offering) aremade. 

Here's a more detailedbreakdown:

Daily Pooja Timings:

The temple opens at 5:00 am with Nada Thurakkal (opening ofthe sanctum). 
Nirmalya Dharshanam follows. Ganapathi Homam, Karukahomam, andMruthyunjayahomam 
are performed around 6:00 am. Usha Nivedyam, Ethruthapooja,and Sheeveli are 
conducted in the morning. Pantheerati Pooja is around 7:35 am,and Uchapooja and 
Uchaseeveli are performed around 10:00 am. The temple closes at10:30 am and 
reopens at 5:30 pm. 

Deeparadhana is at 6:30 pm and Athazha Pooja is at 7:30 pm. Thetemple is closed 
at 7.30 PM. 

Special Pooja &Offerings:

The temple offers various rituals like Rudrabhishekam,dedicated to Lord Shiva, 
and Ashtottara Archana, an offering of 108 names tothe deity. Vellanivedyam is 
a popular offering, with different options for themain deity (Mahadeva) and 
other deities. 

Other Offerings:

Devotees can also maketraditional offerings like coconuts, flowers, milk, and 
jaggery.

Introduction

The Chengamanad Mahadeva Temple, situated in the village ofChengamanad in the 
Ernakulam district of Kerala, India, is one of the supremetemples of Lord Siva. 
This grand temple, known for its spiritual significanceand architectural 
splendour, is home to the principal deity, Shiva in the formof “Kirathamurthi” 
and facing theEast. Spanning an expanse of 3 acres, this temple showcases 
unique featuressuch as the expansive Sreekovil encompassing around 5500 square 
feet and thearchitectural adornment of Nalambalam and Chuttambalam. Notably,it 
possesses the second-largest Sreekovil among Shiva Temples in Kerala, 
asevidenced by available records. 

History

Historical accounts suggest that the temple was constructedby the ruler 
CheramanPerumal approximately 2000 years ago, with the “Pratishta” ceremony 
performedby Shri.Jangama Muni, who arrived at this location for meditation.The 
ownership of the temple was rested with ten Brahmin families, namelyThaliyal 
Mana, Makaramattathu Mana, Maliekkal Mana, Padamattathu Mana, PadappaMana, 
Vaippan Mana, Edaprambilli Mana, Mozhully Mana, Potty Mana, and Aazhvancherry 
Thamprakkal.Due to their geographical dispersion and the challenges of managing 
the templeeffectively, these families have entrusted the management authority 
to the “Urazhma Devaswam Board.”At present, the temple operates under the 
supervision of the “Urazhma DevaswamBoard” and a committee known as the 
“Bharanasahayasamithi,” formed by localresidents.

 

Architecture

The architectural style seamlessly combines traditional Kerala and Dravidian 
elements,characterized by intricate carvings, stone sculptures, and an imposing 
gopuram(entrance tower). Art and architecture enthusiasts are treated to a 
visualspectacle within its premises. Surrounded by lush greenery, the temple 
providesa serene ambiance, facilitating devotees in offering their prayers and 
seekingdivine blessings.

Prime deity

Lord Shiva :

The primary shrine withinthe Chengamanad Mahadeva Temple is dedicated to Lord 
Shiva, with its entrancefacing east. In front of the main shrine, you will find 
the idol ofNandhikesan.

Sree Parvathy :

The shrine of SreeParvathy, the divine consort of Lord Shiva, is located within 
the templeSreekovil and faces west.

Sub deities

Ganapathy &Dakshinamoorthy :

 

The shrines of Ganapathi(Lord Ganesha) and Dakshinamoorthy (the south-facing 
form of Lord Shiva as theteacher of spiritual wisdom) are positioned together, 
facing the south.

Sapthamathrukkal :

Towards the northern sideof the temple, you will find the shrines of the Saptha 
Mathrukkal –Brahmi,Maheswari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, Chamundi – 
along with LordGanapathy and Lord Veera Bhadra. These shrines face north. 

Kannimoola Ganapathy & Umamaheswaran :

Located towards theeastern side of the Nalambalam, the shrines of Kannimoola 
Ganapathi andUmamaheswaran face east

(OUTSIDE NALAMBALAM)

Dharma sastha :

Towards the southwestside of the temple, a separate shrine is dedicated to 
Sreedharma Sasthavu (LordAyyappan), with its entrance facing east.

Vishnu :

Positioned on the northwest side of the temple, there is adedicated shrine for 
Lord Vishnu, also facing east

Bhagavathy :

On the east side of thetemple, you will find a shrine dedicated to Bhagavathy, 
with its entrancefacing east.

Nagaprathrishta :

Underneath the majesticBanyan tree in the southeast, there is an open shrine 
dedicated to Nagayakshiand Nagaraja

Morning 5:00AM to 10.30 AM: Evening  5.30 PM to 8.00 PM 

Protocols to considerwhile visiting the temple | 

Entry inside the temple premises is not permitted  for individuals wearing 
“Kallimundu,” “Kaili,”or “Lungi” attire.

Male visitors are required to fully remove their shirt/t-shirtbefore entering 
the temple premises

The use of mobile devices is strictly prohibited within thesacred area of the 
temple known as “Nalambalam.”

Devotees are kindly urged to adhere to and respect thetraditional customs and 
regulations of the temple during their visit.

It is essential for all devotees to obtain receipts for anyofferings they wish 
to make.

materials within or outside the “Nalambalam” premises

Festivals

The annual festival of the Chengamanad Mahadevar Templeoccurs during the Dhanu 
month (December-January). It commences with thekodiyettu ritual and spans ten 
days, concluding on the Thiruvathira star.Throughout the festival, various art 
forms, including ‘Kathakali,’‘Ottamthullal,’ and ‘Paatakham,’ grace the 
celebrations. The most captivatinghighlight of this temple is the 
“Deepakkazhcha,” a spectacle where traditionallamps adorn the outer walls, 
illuminating the entire temple.

 “Ulsavabali Dharsanam” standsas the most significant offering during the 
festival days. The concluding day (Aarattu) of the festivalfeatures a splendid 
procession with a retinue of elephants and grandperformances of 
‘Panchavaadhyam’ and ‘Paandimelam’ in the morning and evening.The festival 
culminates in a magnificent firework display. Furthermore, thetemple hosts a 
variety of religious festivals and rituals throughout the year,notably 
including Maha Shivaratri, which attracts a substantial number ofdevotees from 
across the region.

Aluva-Mala route, via Athani junction, only 700 meters fromChengamanad Junction 
towards Mala route.The nearest bus stop lies directly infront of the temple, 
ensuring convenient access

The temple is approximately 7.2 kilometers from AngamalyRailway Station and 
10.2 kilometers from Aluva Railway Station.

The closest airport, Cochin International Airport(Nedumbassery), is located 
approximately 8.2 kilometres away
