We desperately need freedom from Economics. YM Sarma
Renunciation refers to the rejection of something,
typically a belief, a claim, or a course of action. It involves giving up
or abandoning a right, title, possession, or a relationship, often
voluntarily. For example, renunciation of citizenship means formally giving
up one's nationality. The key ingredients of economic freedom are personal
choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete in markets, and protection
of person and property. Institutions and policies are consistent with
economic freedom when they allow voluntary exchange and protect individuals
and their property.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna gives His definition of
renunciation:
“One who is unattached to the fruits of his work and who works as he is
obligated is in the renounced order of life, and he is the true mystic, not
he who lights no fire and performs no duty. What is called renunciation you
should know to be the same as yoga, or linking oneself with the Supreme, O
son of Pandu, for one can never become a yogi unless he renounces the
desire for sense gratification.”Gita 6–1,2
This is not at all about detaching from reality!
It is the seemingly paradoxical attitude of doing what one does with total
involvement, but not being attached to the outcome.
If one has to do any task, how can it be by ignoring or detaching from
reality? Karma is ALL about laws of reality!
The detachment expected is about the outcome. Why? For any project or
endeavour of Life, these five factors determine the outcome i.e. Destiny:
One's own personal effort (sva-yatna) — my Karma,
The effort and input of others involved (para-yatna) — their Karma,
Circumstances — environmental, institutional, finance, timing, place, laws
of the land, etc. (paristhiti),
Karma — individual and joint (this is apart from #1 — based on
past/cumulative Karma i.e. Prārabdha Karma of oneself and others),
Grace of the gods (deva-kripa) — unknowable, immeasurable in most practical
situations.
Reality is complex. The outcome of one's efforts are not dependent on #1.
So many things have to fall in place.
Detachment from the outcome is this realisation. I should be totally
involved in the way I do things, wherever my influence can work. But beyond
that accept things are not in my control. So I don't rest my sanity on the
outcome.
CAN RENUNCIATION GET THE FREEDOM FROM ECONOMICS?
Renunciation, whether in a spiritual or legal sense, cannot take an
individual entirely free from the fundamental reality of economics. While
it can change an individual's relationship to economic systems and
motivations, basic material needs and interactions with the allocation of
resources still persist.
In a Spiritual Context
In many philosophical and religious traditions, renunciation involves
detaching from the desire for material possessions, wealth, and the fruits
of one's labor, often through practices like meditation or asceticism.
Focus on internal freedom: The goal is spiritual liberation or inner peace,
not physical escape from the need for food, shelter, and other basic
resources.
Still reliant on resources: Even those in a "renounced order of life" often
rely on the broader society (e.g., through alms, communal living, or a
support structure) to meet their basic needs. Their economic interactions
are minimal, but not non-existent.
Shifting priorities: The individual renounces the pursuit of self-interest
and material accumulation, but the concept of scarcity and the need for
resource management remain.
In a Legal/Civic Context
In a legal sense, renunciation usually refers to giving up one's
citizenship in a particular country.
Economic motivations and consequences: People often renounce citizenship
for economic reasons, such as escaping citizenship-based taxation (as is
the case with some U.S. citizens living abroad) or seeking better economic
opportunities and freedom elsewhere.
Not freedom from economics: Renouncing citizenship merely changes which
economic and legal systems an individual is subject to; it does not remove
them from participating in an economy altogether. They still need to work,
consume, invest, and adhere to a new set of economic rules and policies.
Ultimately, economics deals with the fundamental reality of managing scarce
resources to satisfy human wants. While renunciation can alter a person's
desires for worldly goods or change their legal jurisdiction, it cannot
eliminate the universal need for resources to sustain life and interact
within human society. Therefore, it does not provide complete freedom from
economics itself.
