Bharadwaja Gotra isone of the most exalted gotras (family lineages) of the Brahmin caste. Brahminswith Bharadwaja gotra may use Bharadwajaas their last name. Bharadvaja is considered to be the initiator of theBharadvāja gotra of the Brahmins, Khatris, Bharadvaja is the third in the rowof the Pravara Rishis (Aangirasa, Barhaspatya, Bharadvaja) and is the first inthe Bharadvaja Gotris, with the other two rishis being initiators of Gotraswith their respective names Among all the sevengotras Bharadvāja is the largest chain. Bharadvāja gotra has more than 1400branches. Its Pravara (lineageancestors) consists of three Rishis: Angirasa, Barhaspatya, and Bharadwaja. Itis a Tri-Pravara (three-sage) gotra, though sometimes referenced asDvaya-arshaeya (two-sage) in specific contexts. Also all the warrior brahmins became Kshatriyas later. Later allthe business minded Kshatriyas became vaishyas. Hence there are people of allthe three communities having a common Gotra especially Bhardwaj Gotra. Guru Dronacharya was the son of sage Bharadwaj. All the descendants of BharadwajGotra display warrior skills because sage Bharadwaj married a Kshatriya womancalled Suseela. According to Anulomamarriage, the offsprings who are born to a brahmin father and a kshatriya womantake the characteristics of Kshatriya though technically being a Brahmin. Hencethe brahmin descandants of Bharadwaj Gotra are referred to as Brahma-Kshatriyas(Warrior Brahmins). They are considered to have intelligence in Vedas and war. A renowned scholar, and economist- Rishi Bharadwaja, has beenknown as the first man to have studied medical science and Sage Bharadwaja wasa teacher as well. The big dipperconstellation The Big Dipper Constellation, or in Hindu Mythology the Saptarishiconstellation are referred to the seven sages. Sage Bharadwaja is one amongstthese seven great rishis. Bharadwaja- Three Lives for Three Vedas Sage Bharadwaja through his meditation was granted threelives by Lord Indra to study the three Vedas- Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda. Rishi Bharadwajawanted to learn the three Vedas and therefore, he asked Lord Indra for threelives of hundred years to each to study the Vedas. However, despite the threelives, Rishi Bharadwaja could not learn the three Vedas and then also asked fora fourth life to studying the Vedas. Sage Bhardwaja andLord Sri Rama It is believed that Sage Bharadwaja went to exile along withLord Rama, and Goddess Sita, to obey his father’s words. He crossed severalforests and was instrumental in crossing the River Sarayu, with the help ofGhuhan. It is also believed that Lord Rama stayed in Sage Bharadwaja’s Ashram. Sri Rama meeting sage Bharadwajaduring exile In the epic Ramayana, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana meetBharadvaja at his ashrama (hermitage) at the start of their fourteen-year exile. Thesage asks them to stay with him through the exile, but they insist on goingdeeper into the forest to Chitrakuta, which was three krosha away from theashram. Bharadvaja gives them directions.
