SAGEVISHRAVAS PART 2

Continuedfrom part 1

King Sumali’s Plan toAlter the Lineage

Sumali, the powerful King of the Rakshasas, strategicallyorchestrated a
unionbetween his daughter and Sage Vishravas to breed an unbeatable heir.

The Motivation: Sumali and his clan had beendefeated by Lord Vishnu and forced
to flee from Lanka into the underworld(Patala).

Lankapuri was subsequentlyhanded over to Kubera, the highly virtuous first son
of Sage Vishravas.

The Idea:

One day, Sumali saw Kubera flying past in his glorious,thought-controlled
chariot, the Pushpaka Vimana. Recognizing the immensespiritual and genetic
power of Vishravas's lineage (descended from Brahma),Sumali realized that
purely physical muscle could not defeat the gods. TheRakshasas needed an heir
possessing both supreme spiritual intellect and fiercedemonic strength.

The Seduction: Sumali instructed his beautifuldaughter, Kaikesi, to approach
Sage Vishravas and ask him to father herchildren.

The Fateful Timing: Kaikesi approached the sage whilehe was performing a
powerful fire ritual (yajna) during an inauspicious, fiercetwilight hour.
Vishravas saw through her intentions but agreed toher request.

However, because of the dark hour, he warned her thattheir children would be
born with ruthless, monstrous dispositions. Following her desperate pleas
formercy, he blessed her that theiryoungest child would be righteous.

The Result: Sumali’s calculated plan worked perfectly. Kaikesi gave birth to
Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Surpanakha, as well as the virtuous Vibhishana.

 How Ravana Overthrew Kubera

Armed with his mixed lineage of elite Brahmin intellect andAsura ferocity,
Ravana set his eyes on reclaiming his maternalgrandfather's former kingdom,
Lanka.

The Boons of Invincibility: Ravana, along with Kumbhakarna andVibhishana,
performed intense penances to Lord Brahma.

Ravana secured a boon granting him invincibilityagainst gods, celestial beings,
spirits, and demons.

The Ultimatum: Fuelled by his new powers andheavily egged on by his grandfather
Sumali, Ravana sent a messenger to his stepbrother Kubera, demanding that he
surrender Lanka and leave.

The Sage’s Advice: A highly righteous and peaceful ruler, Kubera sought the
counsel of theirfather, Sage Vishravas.

Seeking to avoid a bloody war within his own family, Vishravas advisedKubera
to yield the golden city to his half-brother.

The Exile: Respecting his father's command, Kubera peacefully vacatedLanka. He
migrated north to the Himalayas, where he established anew, magnificent kingdom
called Alakapuri near Mount Kailash.

The Final Clash &Theft: Ravana'sarrogance did not stop at taking Lanka. Eager
to completely crush any potentialchallenge, he marchedhis demonic armies up to
Alakapuri.

In a fierce battle, Ravana's forces defeated Kubera'sYaksha guardians.

Ravana physically overpowered Kubera and violently seized his
prizedpossession—the Pushpaka Vimana—leaving Kubera humiliated butstructurally
maintaininghis divine status as the eternal God of Wealth.

Ravana’s sacrifice toget Lanka

The DecapitationSacrifice: Ravana possessed ten heads, symbolizing his immense
intellect and command over the four Vedas and sixShastras.

Every 1,000 years, hesevered one of his heads and offered it as an oblation
into the sacred sacrificial fire.

Brahma’s Intervention: After 9,000years, nine of his heads were gone.

As Ravana raised his sword to cut off his tenth and finalhead, Lord Brahma
appeared, deeply moved by his unmatched resolve.

The Boon ofNear-Invincibility: Brahma restored all of Ravana'ssevered heads and
offered him any boon. Driven by pride, Ravanademanded immortality. When Brahma
refused, Ravana pivoted, asking that he couldnever be killed by gods, demons,
celestial spirits (gandharvas), serpents(nagas), or wild beasts.

The Fatal Oversight: Ravana considered humans andmonkeys to be utterly
powerless and beneath his notice. He explicitly left themout of his prayer.
This specific loophole allowed Lord Vishnu to laterincarnate as a human (Lord
Rama) to slay him.

How Lord ShivaPunished Ravana at Mount Kailash

After brutally defeating Kubera at Alakapuri, a triumphantRavana was flying
south in his newly stolen Pushpaka Vimana when the goldenchariot abruptly
stopped mid-air near Mount Kailash.       [Mount Kailash] (Shiva & Parvati)

The Confrontation: Ravana was met by Nandi, the divinebull and gatekeeper of
Lord Shiva. Nandi informed him that the mountain wasoff-limits because Lord
Shiva and Goddess Parvati were enjoying privatemoments.

The Insult: Infuriated by the delay, Ravana mocked Nandi's monkey-like face.
Enraged, Nandi cursed Ravana, prophesying that his gloriouskingdom would
eventually be destroyed by a race of monkeys.

The Display ofArrogance: To prove hissuperiority, Ravana dismounted, thrust his
twenty arms beneath Mount Kailash, and began to forcefully shake it, intending
to rip it from its foundations. Theviolent tremors terrified the living beings
on the mountain, and GoddessParvati clung to Shiva in fear.

The CrushingPunishment: Unmoved, Lord Shiva simply smiled and gentlypressed his
big toe down onto the peak of the mountain. The entireweight of the cosmos
crashed down, trapping Ravana's handsbeneath the mountain.

The Birth of the Name"Ravana":

Trapped in agonizingpain for a thousand years, the demon cried out so loudly
that his screams shook the three worlds. His original name was Dashagriva (the
ten-necked one), but because of histerrifying roar, Shiva named him Ravana
(meaning "he of theterrifying roar").

The Redemption: Realizing his mistake, Ravana used his intellect tocompose and
sing the Shiva Tandava Stotra, a hymn of unparalleledpoetic beauty praising
Shiva's cosmic dance.

Delighted by the music, Shiva freed him, blessed him withthe divine sword
Chandrahas, and became his patron deity.

My note-I have detailed more about Ravana –son of sage Vishravas, because the
aboveinformation can be less known to some members like me.

Details about Kumbhakarna-son of sage Vishravas

While Ravana sought absolute power, his giant brother Kumbhakarnawanted boons
that matched his massive strength. However, his ultimatefate was altered by a
divine conspiracy.

The Gods' Terror ofKumbhakarna

Even before performing penance, Kumbhakarna possessed aninsatiable,
monstrousappetite. He consumed thousands of sages, celestialbeings, and animals
daily just to stay full.

The gods, led by Indra, realized that if Kumbhakarna obtainedan empowering boon
from Lord Brahma, his unchecked strength and hunger would completely wipe out
all livingcreation.

The Divine Deception

When Lord Brahma appeared  alongside the gods to grant Kumbhakarnahis boon, the
gods desperately pleaded with Brahma to stop him.

Recognizing the danger, Brahma invoked Goddess Saraswati (the Goddess of Speech
and Wisdom) andinstructed her totemporarily sit on Kumbhakarna's tongue to
twist his words.

The Tongue-Tie: Kumbhakarna intended to ask for Nirdevatvam (the annihilation
of thegods) or Indrasanam (the throne of Indra).

The Slip of theTongue: As he opened hismouth, Saraswati altered his speech. He
blurted out a requestfor Nidravatvam (eternal sleep) or Nidrasanam (a bed for
sleeping).

The Instant Grant: Lord Brahma immediately granted thewish ("Astu" / So be it)
and Saraswati left his tongue.

 The Modified Curse

Once Kumbhakarna realized he had been tricked, he begged his grandfatherBrahma
for mercy. Ravana also intervened, arguing that a giant warrior sleepingforever
was useless to the Rakshasa clan.

Taking pity, Brahmamodified the boon into a structured cycle:

He would sleep continuously for six months. He would wake up for just one
single day toeat, drink, and walkthe earth.

The Crucial Weakness: Brahma added a clause: if Kumbhakarnawas ever forcefully
awakened early from his six-month slumber due to anemergency, he would become
highly vulnerable and lose his near-invincibility in battle.

This specific modification played a catastrophic role duringthe Ramayana war,
when Ravana had his guards brutally wake Kumbhakarna early tofight Lord Rama's
army, directly leading to the giant's downfall.

 Vibhishana’s(son of sageVishravas) Righteous Boon

While his brothers sought world dominance and physical power,Vibhishana was
entirelydetached from demonic ambitions. From childhood, his mind was
naturallyaligned with Dharma (righteousness) and spiritual purity.

The Uniqueness of HisPrayer: When Lord Brahmaarrived to grant him a boon,
Vibhishana did not ask for wealth, kingdoms, orinvincibility.

His Exact Request: He requested that even in times ofextreme crisis,
temptation, or hardship, his mind and heart shouldnever stray from the path of
righteousness. He also asked that he should always possessintuitive knowledge
of the divine laws.

Brahma’s Overjoyed Reaction: Lord Brahma was deeply moved. It was incredibly
rare for a soulborn into a Rakshasa family to possess such pure, unpolluted
devotion.

The Bonus Blessing: Brahma gladly granted his wish andadded a bonus blessing:
despite not asking for it, Vibhishana was granted Chiranjeevi
status(immortality), ensuring he would live through the ages to guide humanity
towardrighteousness. This purity eventually led him to desertRavana and join
Lord Rama, ultimately making him the King of Lanka.
