POORNATA PERFECTION
Kaivalya (कैवल्य) is the ultimate goal of Rāja-yoga and means
“solitude”, “detachment” or “isolation”, a vrddhi-derivation from kevala
“alone, isolated”. It is the isolation of puruṣa from prakṛti, and
subsequent liberation from rebirth. The terms kevala, kaivalya, or
kaivalya-mukti are encountered in the Upaniṣads, including the Śvetāśvatara
(I and VI) Kaivalya (25), the Amṛtabindu (29) and the Muktikā (1.18, 26,
31) Upaniṣads. The Yogatattva-upaniṣad (16-18) reads, “kaivalya is the very
nature of the self, the supreme state (paramam padam). It is without parts
and is stainless. It is the direct intuition of the Real-existence,
intelligence and bliss. it is devoid of birth, existence, destruction,
recognition, and experience. This is called knowledge.” Kaivalya is mukti
perfection.
“ 19. In me alone is everything born, in me does everything rest,
and in me is everything dissolved. I am that One Alone without a second.
"In me alone is everything born, in me does everything rest, and in me is
everything dissolved" "me alone" refers to Absolute Consciousness. The
meaning is that all experiences of individuals, groups, birth, death and
so forth take place "in" the One Consciousness. "I am that One Alone
without a second" This is confirmation of the above meaning which is to say
Existence is not made up of many forms all joined by one thing to form a
contrived unity. The Truth is literally that Consciousness Alone Exists
and all apparent diversity is merely an experience within that Singularity
of Consciousness. You Alone are all. Kaivalya, the Solitary realisation
of Alone is the great responsibility this Upanishad is trying to wake us up
to. You cannot share this responsibility with others because "others" are
not the reality of Existence. All perceptions, thoughts, ideas and
concepts can be allowed to fall away, Nothing needs to be retained. when
all is gone your infinite Self alone remains. This is not easy to achieve,
courage and great faith in the truth is needed. [kaivalya Upanishad]
The concept of Perfection (Purṇatā)
Both Paramaśiva and Brahman have the perfect nature. Before the
manifestation of the universe it exists within Paramaśiva. He is all
inclusive and there is nothing beyond Him. The universal is ever perfect
and in reality there is not anything new, directly cognized or remembered.
He is described as containing himself all infinite forms:
antaḥkṛtānantaviśvarūpo maheśvaraḥ |
Usages like antaḥsthitavatāṃ, antaḥsthitaṃ and akhilātmā also indicate this
nature. Utpala has pointed out this concept in his Śivastotrāvalī also.
Utpala describes Parameśvara’s Svātantrya as perfection, which is
characterized by the oneness of the known and knower. Brahman also perfect
in his nature. Upaniṣads profusely proclaim the fullness of Brahman. The
well known Śāntimantra says that that is full, this is full, from the full
the full arises. When the full is taken from the full, what remains is full
indeed. Śaṅkara has logically explained it in detail establishing the
perfectness of Brahman. He says thus:
tadyadātmānameva paraṃ pūrṇaṃ brahma viditvā ahamadaḥ pūrṇaṃ brahmāsmītyevaṃ
pūrṇamādāya tiraskṛtyapūrṇarūpatām avidyākṛtāṃ nāmarūpopādhisamparkajāmetayā
brahmavidyayā pūrṇameva kevalamavaśiṣyate |pūrṇamadaḥ pūrṇamidaṃ
pūrṇātpūrṇamudacyate | pūrṇasya pūrṇamādāya pūrṇamevāvaśiṣyate ||
Īśāvāsyopaniṣad, Śāntipāṭha; Bṛhadāraṇyako-paniṣad, 5.1.
Both systems aim at the recognition of the self as the Perfect. [Adi
shankara on Advaitham explaining perfection] K RAJARAM IRS 11626
