Update: the trinidad pleco is doing his job very well. I can actually see my guppies now (even the dead ones which seem to be happening at an alarming rate-4 in the past 24 hours!!) Anyway, my candy-striped pleco also seems to be coming out more. Now I see his tail (which is all I ever see anyway) under his log and my Trinidad is usually close by.
