Thanks Frederic. I just wanted to follow up with the solution. Of course, I didn't have git (although, interestingly, I got the same error on another computer with git). I also had to use the following pip install --upgrade --no-deps git+https://github.com/Theano/Theano.git instead of pip install --upgrade --no-deps git+git://github.com/Theano/Theano.git
