I thoroughly enjoyed this series on TV and would very
much like to own it all on DVD (unfortunately this disk is all that's
available at the moment).
The basic premise is appealing: a small
group of young vampires are given sanctuary at an exclusive boarding
school to both protect them from the war between the two opposing vampire
'clans', the Fury and the Elders, and to 'humanise' them in preparation
for living safely amongst humans. The series explores how the vampires and
the school's principal (who is an unusual man himself) try to accomplish
this. At the same time a larger group of young human students, all with
problems of their own, lives and learns in the above-ground part of the
school, and are unaware of the vampires living below them - until one of
the vampires falls in love with one of the humans. And to complicate
matters further, one of his fellow vampires is in love with him...
The series has its flaws - there are a number of inconsistencies
and some considerable plot-holes, and the acting is occasionally uneven -
but on the whole it's a wonderful watch, oddly gentle, perceptive and
thought-provoking. This DVD contains the first four (of 26) episodes
excellently combined into a full-length film, without losing any of the
details of the series. I really hope the rest are also released on
DVD.
