Arlington Ghosts....

The two incidents I'm writing about both happened at Ft. Myer, VA, which is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, while I was stationed there on active duty as an MP. Military Police get all the fun jobs like midnight security checks of the various unattended buildings on post.

Included in the checks is the Old Post Chapel, which has been handling funerals for veterans, retirees, and KIA's to be buried in the cemetery since around 1900 or so. The Chaplain or one of the assistants are supposed to lock up at the end of the day, and I never had any reason to believe they didn't. Okay, maybe once or twice they missed a door, but not as often as we would find it open after the previous shift had reported it secure.

Procedure dictates that a K-9 unit must search a building before anyone else could go in during the nightshift or on weekends. The problem that we kept having was that these fiercely disciplined dogs often (3 out of 5 times) refused to go into the basement. The basement had some offices and really no creepy quality about it at all, but the dogs would not budge past the first step. Having gone down there myself several times, I 'felt' something else there, but was never really scared. My hair would stand up on the back of my neck, but having a loaded gun and a comrade with you takes a lot of the edge off of that. Why would any dead soldier want to freak a fellow soldier out anyway? Apparently only if you don't get the hint.

The second story was told to me secondhand, so I cant' guarantee it's validity with 100% certainty. But the source had no reason to BS me, and other credible sources (my NCOIC) backed it up as if 'yeah, you didn't know?'.

The story of Arlington National Cemetery is the land was owned by Robert E. Lee, until he sided with the Confederates in the Civil War. The Union took possession of his land, and immediately began burying their dead there to really do him wrong. A Union soldier was stationed at a guard post, close to where the gate by the Old Post Chapel is now located, and fell asleep at his post. His throat was slit by a rebel in the middle of the night.

One of my fellow MP's was on the night shift and had parked by the chapel to rest his eyes for a bit. Now, any smart MP who is going to sleep on duty, will lock the car doors to prevent the patrol supervisor from catching you and snatching your keys and other things. I assume that to be the case here as well.

Our Spec-4 was awakened shortly after nodding off by a knocking on his window. Looking straight ahead, he saw written on his windshield in the mist "Wake up, or I'm going to kill you". Passing this off as one of the other patrols playing games with him, he clicked on the wipers and washed away the words, and went back to his catnap. Again within five minutes, he was awakened by the knocking on his window, to find written on the windshield "Wake up or I'm going to kill you".

Seriously irritated, he got out to look around and saw nobody near. He called on the radio to find the other patrols either at the station, or the gate. Undeterred, he again cleared the windshield, and resumed his nap. A half hour later, he was woken by the patrol supervisor knocking on his window, looking slightly worried, asking if he was alright. The latest writing on his windshield was "I warned you!" His throat felt sore, but he didn't see the red slash mark across his throat until he was turning in his paperwork at the station and was in a brighter light.

Needless to say, he was hastily reassigned to Ft. Belvoir for the rest of his time in the DC area. I would have taken the first hint and moved to a new location that was well lit with other people around, but some people just don't want to believe.

Thanks for the submission! I love military related ghost Stories! I'm sure there are probably tons of experiences and encounters in a place like Arlington.

Haunted Air Force Dorm....

I was out looking for ghost information on the web and came across Kathy Christian's story (posted Sept 01) at Sheppard AFB. I was stationed there and experienced some weird activity myself.

I was there for Medical Lab Technician tech school and was living in the medical dorms. When I first got there, people would tell us stories of ghostly activity (handprints in freshly waxed floors, little kids appearing then disappearing, etc). I just took the stories to be just stories.

However, after about a month there, I started hearing something calling my name in my dorm room. It sounded like it was coming from one corner of the room where I had a stereo speaker placed. I thought it may have been cross signal that was coming through the wires or maybe just my imagination.

Over the next couple of weeks, the voice would come through every few days and, by that time, I'd just figured it was my imagination...until one night things got really weird. I woke up out of dead sleep one night to see a black guy in BDU pants and a black t-shirt at the foot of my bed.

Thinking it was a friend of mine from down the hall playing a trick on me, I shouted "Will, what are you doing in here?!". An angry look came over his face and he pointed his finger at me. I fell back down and he disappeared. Not a second after he disappeared, my roommate sat straight up in bed and said "Chris, did you see that?!" then went right back to sleep. I sat there stunned for a minute then went back to sleep myself.

That's not where it ends. A bunch of us were watching a movie in my room on a Saturday night when a couple of the people there just happened to look out the window at the same time and saw a big, rotating, orange orb.
It lasted a few seconds then went away. The girls screamed and the guys yelled "What the hell was that?". We never saw anything like that again, but after that the weird activities pretty much ended.

There were a couple of other events, but they're not really significant.  I'd like to find out some of the darker history of the base, see if there's a connection to the haunting and any related actual events.

Wow! We love a good military haunting story!  Well, you never know we may yet hear more about this situation from others who read these stories! Stay tuned dear reader...

Chief Boots....

When I was in the service working C-130 aircraft, we had a few birds still in service from the Viet Nam era. Two of those birds (according to the guy who trained me) had been body carriers, ferrying the fallen back from Asia. All sorts of creepy things would happen on those aircraft.

That same guy who trained me said he was out there on third shift one night, head and shoulders into a junction panel in the electronics bay. He was bent over, wormed between black boxes in an awkward position and needed the screwdriver still laying on the deck behind him. He heard footsteps and saw military boots behind him, and assumed it was the bird's crew chief. He asked for the screw driver and it was handed to him.

A minute later, he got himself out of the panel, stood up and looked around. There was nobody on the aircraft. You can see for quite a ways on that flightline, and there was nobody walking away. No trucks had pulled up - - nothing. The owner of those boots had just disappeared.
