blue as flame

Blue.
Devin's dreams were always filled with blue. It was the color behind his
eyes when he closed them. It was the color he saw whenever he awoke.
Blue was the color of its eyes.
For two months now, ever since his nineteenth birthday, he had seen him in
his dreams. The creature. He wasn't quite sure what it was; it could have been
a vampire, or an incubus. Sometimes it was both. The dreams were always
pleasant, sensual, beautiful. And yet he always woke up in a cold sweat,
shivering with fear.
Devin would always be reluctant to sleep, but when he finally did, he always
gave in to the dream, willingly.
This night, he had insomnia. He tried to sleep, despite the promise of the
dreams to come, but couldn't. He lay in bed, remembering the first one he had
ever had...
Devin was in a dark room, his bedroom in fact, lying on his bed. He felt the
softness of the pillow, the warmth of the wool blanket, as if they were
real, as if he were lying in bed awake and not dreaming.
He heard a sound.
His first thought was that it was a burglar - irrational, since Devin's
apartment was sparsely finished and contained nothing of worth. But then who
was
it?
He saw the eyes before he saw anything else.
Glowing, melting blue eyes, attached to a being with flowing blond hair,
dressed in a black velvet coat and jeans. Moving with graceful movements,
graceful as he came to sit on the edge of Devin's bed.
"Beauty." The man stroked Devin's brown hair, pulling one of the curls
straight and watching it curl up again.
"What do you want of me?" was Devin's invariable response.
"You."
"What do you mean?"
"I want you. I want everything you are."
"How?"
"Not yet."
"What?"
"Shhh." The man was stroking Devin's chest now, unbuttoning the cutoffs he
had worn to bed.
"But I..."
"Be still...don't fear me. I won't harm you."
And Devin always lay numbly as the man - creature - vampire - whatever it
was - undid his own clothes, dropping them to the floor and sliding under the
covers of the bed.
"My beauty..."
And he spoke no more as his lips devoured Devin's, his hands clutching
Devin's shoulders. Devin felt curiously powerless, laying back in the
creature's
arms as he pushed him down on the bed, kissing his way down Devin's body.
Devin tensed as the man - vampire - bit into his inner thigh.
The ecstacy was immeasurable. The feeling of the blood leaving him, the feel
of the vampire's lips moving against him... it was incredible, and Devin's
hands involuntarily tangled in the vampire's hair as he cried out again and
again...
He felt the vampire's soft laugh, his breath, against his skin before he
heard it.
"There's more, my lovely..."
He tugged lightly at a strand of Devin's hair, kissing his shoulder, before
he bit down again, snaking an arm around Devin's waist to hold him still.
"Oh!" Devin writhed beneath him, clutching at his back, and when he started
to feel dizzy and weak he was surprised to find that he didn't even care.
"You're dying, my dear..." And the vampire slashed his razor-sharp
fingernail across his own neck, offering the bloody wound to Devin.
He always accepted, gladly, but just as the blood would start to seep into
his mouth, just as he began to know the taste of eternity, he always woke
up...
He lay back, thinking, wishing he could sleep. He had a job now, he couldn't
afford to stay up all night, even to avoid the dreams as he used to. He
looked over at the clock. The green-glowing numbers from the bedside table
read
11:59, October 31. And he remembered that in his dream this was when the
vampire always came.
He saw the eyes before he saw anything else, melting, glowing as blue as
flame.
