Chapter 12

Alex was unconscious when Lestat and Jon burst through the door, coming to her
rescue; Marius was fighting in the hall with Armand, who was also carrying
James’s near dead body over his shoulder.

No words were exchanged between them and Alex’s questioner, before James threw
him off of her, and broke his neck. “That was a little much Jon, and he
could’ve given us information about the rogues.” Lestat frowned as he picked
Alex up from the ground; being very careful not to hurt her any further, she
looked so fragile, it was nearly enough to break his heart. “He deserved to
die, the bastard.” Jon spat coldly. “True, very true, but we could’ve used him
none the less” Lestat frowned.

“Lestat, is she alright?” Jon asked painfully; finally taking notice of Alex’s
bloody bruised body. She wasn’t in much better condition than James at this
point, he had really tried to kill her. “I don’t know, I think she will be.” he
answered plainly.

“We can’t fight them all, we have to move. Armand has already made it out with
James, get Alex out of here. Jon, he’s at the cave where we were hiding before,
meet him there.” Marius announced suddenly from the doorway; all the while
fighting three vampires, and one human. “Give her to me, I’ll get her out. Help
Marius, and meet us up there.” Jon ordered Lestat as he left; taking Alex with
him.

He was almost out when two vampires, and three humans cut him off. “We’ve been
hunting you for a while now… we couldn’t let you just leave could we?” one of
them asked as he positioned for a fight. “We aren’t the ones you want, if I was
out killing mortal companions, would I be carrying her with me right now?” he
replied angrily. “She’s your cover, of course you would.” another laughed in a
‘how could you have asked such a stupid question’ sort of way. “I’m not with
the rogues, I don’t kill anymore than I have to, and I’m not going to stand
here and argue with you about something you clearly know nothing about!” Jon
spat.

Before another word could be spoken the vampires and mortals charged, and the
fight began. He had no problem taking out the human attackers, but fighting the
vampires without letting Alex get hurt any further was proving highly
difficult. He did his best to keep her in his arms while fighting, out of fear
something would happen to her if he had put her down, but it was impossible; he
dropped her, with no time to pick her up again before he was pinned to the
ground by the two vampires.

A third vampire came out from the hall where Marius had been fighting, and
picked her up. Jon screamed and tried to get to her as she was carried off away
from him. “Just let her go, she isn’t going to tell anyone about anything. She
needs to get to a hospital, or she’ll die, just let her go!” he pleaded; blood
tears stinging his face. “If you want her to live, then tell us who is leading
the rogues; because they are far too organized to be ‘Rogue’.” one of the
vampires bargained. “Ask one of the ‘rogues’ then, because I don’t have the
answers you’re looking for. I have no idea why you’re all thinking Marius and I
have something to do with this.” he replied honestly. “Then she dies. Simple as
that.” he shrugged, and began to drain Jon of all his blood. Jon fought against
him the best he could, but was too restricted. If Lestat hadn’t ran around the
corner when he did, Jonathan Samson would’ve been no more.

Lestat ripped the vampire that was feeding on Jon away, and threw him back
before forcing the other to let go of Jon; Jon was very weak, but still able to
fight. Between the two of them, it didn’t take long to defeat the two vampires;
rage is often the best weapon in those situations.

“Where’s Alex?” Lestat asked as soon as they had killed the two. “They took
her, I don’t know where. We have to get her back Lestat, they’ll kill her!” he
shouted; starting to search the surrounding rooms frantically.

Lestat joined him in his search to find Alex. They searched room, after room,
after room. To their surprise, they were met with very few enemies along the
way. They had searched over twenty rooms eachbefore Lestat found her; lying in
a puddle of blood, in Marius’ arms. Marius was rocking her gently, whispering
something so quiet that even Lestat couldn’t hear it; he had already taken off
the cuffs that had been binding her arms behind her back the entire time. He
froze, his undead heart stopped, he couldn’t even call to Jonathan that he had
found her.

“Is she…?” he whispered; finally regaining the use of his vocal cords.

“No… not yet. She’s just barely here, they slit her throat when I walked in.”

“She’s going to be okay though.” Lestat was more trying to convince himself
than Marius.

“I don’t know… I did what I could for her; healed the gash on her neck,
bandaged a few of her other wounds. She’s still very weak, and needs blood.
She’s lost so much already, I’m afraid to move her.”

“ALEX!” Jonathan cried upon entering the room; rushing to her side, and
knocking Lestat out of his way. “Jonathan, carry her very carefully, up to
Armand, and get her and James to a hospital. The sun will be rising soon, so
hurry. We will visit her tomorrow night.” Marius instructed; moving her was
dangerous, but leaving her be was a death sentence.

“What if she dies, and we’re not there?” he asked nervously. “Hurry Jonathan.”
Marius ordered harshly; placing Alex in his arms, and motioning for him to
leave the room. “Jon, get her there safe.” Lestat added as he left.

Topside, Armand was waiting in the cave Jonathan and Marius had been hiding in
before the rescue. “What’ve they done to her?” he gasped when he saw Alex’s
seemingly lifeless body lying limp in Jon’s arms. “We have to get to the
hospital, now. She needs a blood transfusion, among other things, and he
probably needs the same.” he replied. “No, he doesn’t Jonathan.” Armand sighed.

“What do you mean? They nearly killed him, how could he not need…” Jon trailed
off when he saw the way James was lying; arms folded, and face covered with
Armand’s jacket. “When did he..?”

“Half an hour ago. There was nothing I could do to help him. His last request
was that we take care of Alex, convince her to forgive him for what he did to
her, and kill Rae if he so much as tries to touch her.” Armand answered before
Jon could finish his question; “To honor his death wish, you should get moving.
Letting her die isn’t taking care of her, and she doesn’t have much time.”

Jonathan nodded and made his way to the hospital. He knew that when Alex woke
up that someone would have to give her the news about James’ death; and he knew
that news would tear her heart out. The whole way to the hospital he thought
about how they could tell her. Saying something as blunt as ‘Alex, James died.’
seemed too heartless for even him… in fact, he was beginning to think he didn’t
want to be the one to tell her at all. Everything he came up with, would still
hurt her too much. There was no easy, painless way to tell someone a friend had
died, but to tell someone you loved that news, was torture. Even for the undead.

Jon walked into the Emergency Room, ignoring the strange stares was earning
from the nurses and doctors; he looked like an albino with how pale his skin
was, and under the E.R. lighting, he realized her complexion wasn’t much darker
than his.

“She needs blood, has several broken bones, especially her wrist, she’s been
badly beaten, and I can’t stay with her. I have to go, I’ll be back tomorrow
night. Keep her alive, you’re a doctor, Fix Her.” he said as he handed her off
to the first doctor he saw.

“But Sir,” Jon was already out the door before any questions could be asked.
