.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ . Weekly focus # 26 / what's hot (or not) on the pof-200 list .~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi everyone, Time is short for me this evening so I will be more brief than usual. ** I am glad to see that DJ has agreed to lead our effort to organize a study group to read Lenin's famous book on imperialism. I believe that this study will be of great help in understanding our tasks in the antiwar movement and in opposing the influence of the Democratic Party and its flunkies in the movement. If this study is successful -- then it will be easier for us to also study works by some of the other authors that have been proposed. DJ -- would you consider setting up a "project page" in our wiki that could serve as a place for members of our community to go and find out the current status of this project and find out, for example: (1) who is participating in the study group, (2) where the public archives of the discussion are and (3) what they need to do to join it? ** I have added a "status report" section at the bottom of the wiki page of the anti-reformist working group. My idea is that all active projects that our community is involved in will maintain a status report page (or status report section). Then our central projects page will list as "active" those projects that have updated their status within the last 10 days. This will allow activists who are new to our community (and want to join their efforts to some worthwhile project) to quickly and easily find out which projects are really active. ** DJ -- if you have time could you take a look at our community projects page and let me know what you think about proposed task # 118? The title of this is "DJ / Ben discussion concerning the fundamental goals and tactics of our movement". This would involve continuing our discussion from last September. Since we are making progress on our anti-reformism page we are in a better position to consider how we can discuss, in a constructive way, our views on the key principles for building our movement. I believe that this discussion may be of value to other members of our community. I am thinking that we could both agree to post once or twice a month on these topics -- not in a formal debate -- but in a more casual manner. Maybe we could consider this beginning sometime in February? ** The main page of our wiki was recently "hacked" by a spam robot which littered the main page with links to spam sites. It is interesting how this illustrates the development of technology. It could have been a human who did this -- but I suspect a robot program automatically registered itself at our wiki and added the links to our front page. Many blog and wiki sites appear to be experiencing this problem. I would like our front page to be in "protected" mode -- where it cannot be modified by just any registered user. 8thfloor -- can you look into this? Would this be difficult to do? I would also like to see some kind of password mechanism on our registration page so that we can prevent robots from registering -- and so that we can limit wiki registration to members of our community. Once we set up the "blog" feature for wiki pages this will provide a mechanism for non-members of our community to post comments, questions and criticisms to our wiki pages. Also -- I have completely updated the page for "wiki improvement ideas". It would be great if 8thfloor or any of the technically experienced computer people on this list could take a look at that page and evaluate whether they have the time to assist on some of these tasks. In particular -- we need to (1) remove all "dead links" from the left-hand margins of our pages and (2) make sure that each member of our community has the right to their own "zone" on our wiki in which they would have exclusive control of the wiki pages. Our wiki would continue to have a "commons" area where anyone could modify any page. ** I have suspended Steve Wallace's right to post to the pof-200 list. Steve may still, at this time, post to our pof-300 sister list. I will have more to say about this next week, when I have a little more time. ** I was not allowed this evening to attend (ie: I was asked to leave) what had been advertised as a public NION meeting for activists who were organizing independent actions for January 20. Those who want to follow the details of this can take a look at the Seattle Indymedia thread: http://seattle.indymedia.org/en/2004/12/243476.shtml I may be adding to that thread later tonite.
