Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcus,
Veracruz, Mexico. While she's a terrific actress, many people
associate her name with her colorful and bold beauty-just like
the dahlia, the national flower of Mexico.

The dahlia is a bushy plant that produces brightly colored
flowers in the summer and fall. It is native to Mexico, but has
traveled the world winning the hearts of gardeners with its
large, bright blooms. In 1872, a box of dahlia roots traveled
from Mexico to the Netherlands. Unfortunately, only one of the
plants actually survived the trip, but that plant, which produced
gorgeous red flowers with pointed petals, went on to produce all
of today's dahlia hybrids as it was crossed with other dahlias
that had been discovered earlier.

The dahlia is available in several varieties that range greatly
in size. They may be as small as one foot tall in height or as
large as six feet tall. The dahlia's blooms range from a
two-inch diameter to an enormous twelve-inch diameter. Colors
include orange, pink, purple, red, scarlet, yellow, and white.
Some are even striped petals or have petals tipped in a different
color.

Dahlias can be grown from tuberous roots or seeds, rooted from
cuttings, or bought as a plant to be transplanted to your garden.
The tuberous roots can be saved to produce beautiful flowers year
after year. In fact, the roots can be separated to increase the
number of plants grown.

If you plan to divide your tuberous roots, you should do so
before you plant them in the spring. Wait for the eyes in the
roots to produce new growth, but be sure to divide them before
that growth reaches more than an inch in length. Use a sharp
knife to cut the roots, and be sure to leave at least one viable
eye on each section. After cutting, let the new surfaces dry or
cover them in sulfur before you plant them.

When planting dahlias, choose an area that receives at least six
hours of sunlight daily. Also, be sure the plants will be
protected from high winds that could damage them. The water
should be very fertile and have good drainage, as dahlias do not
like to be soaked in water. If you're planting large roots, you
can begin planting as early as two weeks before the last frost.
However, if the roots are small, it's best to wait until after
the last frost.

With a little care, the vividly colored Mexican dahlia can give
your garden some beauty and flair to rival that of fellow
native-Mexican Salma Hayek.
