Slot machines were used in the Wild West in the United States and were played in bars and taverns. In the Old West, there were few if any laws regulating slots and the way the payouts were managed, or not managed. This is why slot machines were often referred to as the "one-armed bandit". Things have changed a great deal since then, and playing slots has become a much safer bet. Slot machines were used in the Wild West in the United States and were played in bars and taverns. In the Old West, there were few if any laws regulating slots and the way the payouts were managed, or not managed. This is why slot machines were often referred to as the "one-armed bandit". Things have changed a great deal since then, and playing slots has become a safer bet than in the time's past. When you go to a brick and mortar casino, the slots will be labeled with a sign saying something along the lines of 99.6% payout guaranteed. So just what does this mean? If you will notice most of these signs are posted atop of an island of slots. There may be up to 20 machines in an area and the sign indicates that this high payout exists. What you may not realize is that legally that sign only has to represent the payout odds of one of those machines, not all of them. It only means that one machine in the island of slots has a high payout. Casinos have worked for years to perfect the art of the slots and how to make the most money from their machines. The good news is that there are ways to win some money when playing slots. In order to win money while playing slots, there is some basic facts about slots that you must understand, if you wish to have an edge over the house. Educating yourself about how theses machines work is the first step into maximizing your winnings. First of all, despite what people may tell you, there is no so-called "hot streaks" that the machines are set up for. The slots are set up to produce absolutely random results. I know, there are many people who will tell you that slots are set up to work this way or that way, but the plain truth is that slots work on absolute randomization when it comes to whether or not you win. A hot streak is a mere coincidence of these random results, not a pre-programmed system in which the casino lets you win a certain amount. Since there is no such thing as hot streaks, and since the machines are set up to provide random results, a system of betting in which you believe that the next $20 or the next $50 that you put in the machine will result in a jackpot is simply unfounded. When playing slots, the best way to maximize your winnings is to pace yourself and to use common sense. It requires a great deal of discipline to quit when you are ahead, but this is the most realistic method to make money off of the slot machines. Playing to maximize your winnings may seem a bit odd, and some people simply want to play for fun, which is fine. But if you want to win money and get ahead then you need to practice this self-control. Let's say that you put $10 into a machine and after a few minutes of losing credits you win $20. Is this a good time to stop and go to another machine? Most likely it is. The statistical odds of winning a giant jackpot are small when playing the slots, but the statistical odds of winning small amounts are a lot higher. Taking the small amounts of winnings that you get may not give you the rush of winning a huge jackpot on the slots, but it will help you to maximize your winnings. Remember, there are no presets to the machines that provide you with hot streaks; it is merely randomized results that you will get when playing slots. Nowadays many people are playing online slots with online casinos because it is easier than driving all the way to the noisy, smoky casinos. The same odds of winning with physical slots apply with online slots. Typically, the online casinos will make public the payout percentages of their machines, just like the brick and mortar casinos do with their 99.6% payout signs, etc. When people gamble there are two different trains of thought that gamblers use. One says what might happen; the other says what will probably happen. The person, who focuses on what might happen, is likely to take huge risks when playing slots and is counting on the big jackpot to come on the next spin. The gambler, who focuses on what will probably happen, plays the statistical odds and does not rely on luck to win money. In the end, it is usually the person who focuses on what will probably happen that gets ahead in the game of slots. But, since it is gambling and a game of chance, sometimes the person who focuses on what might happen does in fact hit that huge jackpot. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Alvin Nedrow writes about his favorite pastime... gambling.
