The Landscape of a Baby Boomer!

The estimated annual spending power of the baby boomers is $1
trillion dollars. The boomers have a lot of disposable income,
they are educated, recognize quality and desire convenience. On
the interior, their focus over the next few decades will span
well beyond expanding doorways and one level houses. They not
only desire convenience but they aspire to acquiring many of the
"finer things of life".

The buzz word for baby boomers is functionality. They want
spacious kitchens with top amenities such as more than one sink,
quiet running dish drawers, counter depth refrigerators and hot
water directly from the tap. They also want a comfortable home
office filled with the latest technology from the wireless
network, to machines that can fax, scan, copy and print quality
photographs. They want a media room for them and friends to
enjoy movies and music wired with surround sound speakers in the
ceiling, theatre style seating and a flat screen. They want an
exercise facility to keep fit and healthy with mirrored walls, an
elliptical machine and the sound system piped in for music to
accommodate the work out.

They are quality conscious and look for the best in materials.
Additionally, they will make their homes "intelligent". Over
time intelligence will morph from regulating their home's
temperature and lights from the car while driving home, to being
able to remind them to feed the dog or take a pill. Those are
just a few of the transformations taking place inside the baby
boomers home.

Additionally, the outdoors is taking on a new look with baby
boomers, as well. With the outdoor living focus that is infecting
homeowners of all ages, the baby boomers are leading this craze.
They typically create a retreat of some sort to sip their freshly
brewed gourmet coffee while reading the Wall Street Journal.
Whether they are on a screened porch or a pergola covered patio,
they are taking in the fresh air and loving it. Fireplaces and
outdoor kitchens are becoming necessary amenities.

Boomers fluctuate between being do-it-yourselfers and paying for
services. They can certainly afford to have many chores done for
them whether it is someone to organize their closets, clean their
pool or manicure their lawns. However, they are capable as well
as still able and desire to keep their minds sharp. So, they
often try their hand at new skills and specifically attempt to
become experts. They will research on the internet, purchase
books and study first hand with the community experts.

Culinary and gardening hobbies seem to be at the top of the list.
No matter your family size, marital status, employment status or
income level, every one loves to eat and most people love to
entertain. So the kitchen is a practical place to develop a
hobby.

The garden is also a useful place to develop a leisure pursuit.
Whether it is flowers blooming year round, fresh flowers for
cutting or herbs growing for those specialty dishes gardening is
a wonderful way to learn, develop an interest and enjoy.

For the boomer who is focused on culinary hobbies the kitchen
should be stocked the likes of 2 sinks, a convection oven, the
espresso machine, multiple dish drawers and a wet bar nearby with
a temperature controlled wine cooler, unless of course they have
a cellar.

For the gardening aficionado, in the boomers landscape you will
find a neat, tight lawn with annuals and perennials cohabitating
throughout the seasons in mounded beds. With boomers, more is
better, and the landscape will move up into containers and window
boxes. These allow another outlet for green space and color
while enable the avid gardener to spare their backs by not having
to bend over to maintain them. The herb garden purposefully
placed in a window box outside the kitchen window is especially
desirable for the boomers who try their hands at gardening and
cooking. Irrigation systems are standard and drip lines are
conveniently used to minimize the need of manual watering.

Boomers have a zest for life and love their home life. They will
do whatever it takes to make their interior as well as their
exterior landscape aesthetically appealing while functional.
Personally, I want to be invited over to the homes of my baby
boomer friends as much as possible. They enjoy life, the
niceties it has to offer and it is infectious.
