Banff Scenic Drives

Consider Alberta's most scenic drive a romp through the candy
store of Canada's Rocky Mountain wilderness. Take your sweet
tooth on a 2-1/2 hour to eight-hour trip (depending on your
hunger for viewpoints) and you'll pass rack upon rack of hiking,
climbing, biking and fishing confections that will accommodate
any outdoor appetite.

Start this scenic drive in the picturesque village of Lake
Louise. Located in Banff National Park, 45 mins. west of the
Banff townsite, the tiny village provides shopping, lodging (from
an all-star hostel to a Relais & Chateaux property), outdoor
travel guides, books, maps, meals, automotive services, hiking
and tourist information. About 2.5 miles above the village is the
lake itself, dominated by the majestic Victoria Glacier and one
of Canada's most storied properties, the Fairmont Chateau Lake
Louise. Aside from ambling around Lake Louise, you can also visit
nearby Moraine Lake. Surrounded by a panorama of 10 glaciated
summits, Moraine Lake is found at the base of the Continental
Divide, the geographic point where all waters flow either west to
the Pacific Ocean or east to the Atlantic Ocean.

Road Trip Planner

>From Lake Louise, the scenic Rocky Mountain drive heads north
along the snow- capped Icefields Parkway to Jasper National Park.
Stop at Hector Lake, the second largest lake in the park, though
if you want to walk, continue a couple of miles further to Bow
Lake, where the Bow Lake and Bow Glacier Falls trail offers the
best lake walk of the drive. Beyond, the road climbs to Bow
Summit (6,300 ft.), the highest point on a Canadian highway, and
shortly afterwards passes a sign to the Peyto Lake Lookout. If
you stop nowhere else, stop here, and walk the easy 20-minute
trail (300 ft. descent) to probably the most breathtaking
viewpoint in Alberta's Rockies.

Just beyond this area is the Saskatchewan River Crossing, the
junction of Highway 11. If you're following outdoor travel
guides, they will likely recommend taking a short detour east
where you'll discover fantastic tracts of wilderness noted for
fishing, trail riding and hiking, such as the Wildland Recreation
Area, White Goat Wilderness, Cline River and Abraham Lake.

But back on your scenic drive, keep veering northwest and you'll
soon see the Weeping Wall, where water from melting snow, high on
Cirrus Mountain, leaks through cracks in the seemingly
impenetrable cliff face and then plunges downwards as a series of
graceful waterfalls (very popular with climbers in the winter).

Viewpoints nearby include the Cirrus Mountain Lookout and Bridal
Veil Falls, the latter providing access to a rough track to
Panther Falls. Two miles further along this scenic drive is a
sign marking the start of the Parker Ridge Trail, the second of
the walks, en route that you really shouldn't miss: the ridge
offers memorable views of the mighty Saskatchewan Glacier.

Back on blacktop, next up is the Columbia Icefield where you can
take another type of scenic drive, aboard an Ice Explorer right
on to the belly of the Athabasca Glacier. From the highway the
Athabasca and Dome glaciers are visible and there is a fine view
of the glacier-draped north face of Mt. Athabasca at 12,762 ft.
(3,490 m). The Interpretive and Information Centre contains a
scale model of its impressive 125 sq. mi (325 sq. km) area of
glacial ice and snow and an audio-visual presentation – they also
offer lodging and nearby hiking opportunities.

Family Vacations

Whether you're empty-nesters or on a family vacation, everyone
loves to look for bighorn sheep and goats at Tangle Falls,
Stutfield Glacier Viewpoint and Goat Lookout. Stutfield Glacier
Viewpoint offers a terrific view of the Sunwapta River, an
excellent example of a braided river. The valley bottom is filled
with sand and gravel spreading the river across the valley floor
in interlacing channels. The Stutfield Glacier features a
picturesque pair of ice falls, which spill down the face of Mt.
Stutfield. Take the 1/2 mile (1 km) access road from the
Icefields Parkway to Sunwapta Falls and Canyon and see where the
Sunwapta River changes its course abruptly from northwest to
southwest, then plummets into a deep canyon producing a
spectacular waterfall.

The scenic drive ends in Jasper, a mountain retreat with all the
modern amenities of a city surrounded by breathtaking scenery and
an abundance of wildlife. Activities include golfing, rafting,
fishing, trailriding, hiking, hot springs bathing and a tramway
ride to the top of Whistlers Mountain.
