One of America's most beloved flowers, the rose is cherished for its beauty and scent. They've long been a symbol of romance and florists sell countless dozens of roses to people wishing to woo, congratulate, send get well wishes, or just to say, "I was thinking of you." The rose is so popular that it even has its own week in the flower industry in some states-Caring Rose Week. Caring Rose Week has taken place for seven years in the month of November. It's a week of inexpensive roses for those who are willing to donate money or food to The Golden Harvest Food Bank or other select charitable organizations across the country. The weeklong event was conceived by Harry Whelden of North American Wholesale Florist in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Whelden began the event as a means of boosting sales at a time when flower sales were slumping. But, the event itself doesn't actually make much money-most florists just break even. However, the event does bring people into the stores just as holiday seasons begin, and many of them come back to purchase flowers at a later date. During Caring Rose Week, florists pay a $25 flat fee to flower wholesalers to pay the printing costs for flyers and posters advertising the event. Customers who come into the participating flower shops can purchase a dozen roses-2 stems each of 6 different varieties-for the incredibly low price of just $10. The catch? To be eligible for the discounted price, customers must donate $2 or 2 cans of food to the store's charity organization. Florists in the Georgia State Floral Distributors program donate to The Golden Harvest Food Bank in Augusta, Georgia; those in the North American Wholesale program may choose where donations go. Caring Rose Week currently takes place in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming, Georgia, and South Carolina. It takes place at the same time as National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week. In 2006, more than 350 florists took part in the event. While Angelina Jolie may not live in one of the states where the event takes place, florists who participate are hopeful that the goodwill of the event will catch on and spread to all other states in the country. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers (http://www.wesleyberryflowers.com), a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
