Copyright (c) 2006 Wesley Berry, AAF Wesley Berry Flowers http://www.800wesleys.com/ More and more people are turning to the Internet for their shopping needs. They order everything from clothing, to toys, to books, to flowers. And, because of its ease of use, speed, and convenience, online shopping is appealing to all sorts of people, including big stars like Pamela Anderson. While it may be easy and convenient to place orders online, the sites we visit may not always be what they seem. For example, if Pamela Anderson logs on to the Internet to order flowers for a friend, can she be certain they're coming from the local florist as the site makes them appear to? Unfortunately, the answer is no. We've all heard stories of people being bilked out of money because of shady online practices. Sadly, that trend seems to have even permeated the floral industry. One Grandville, Michigan florist named Roy Sabo, of Sunnyslope Floral, conducted some informal research into how online practices affect florists and discovered that deceptive Internet ads are everywhere. These ads try to make users believe they're legitimate ads from local florists, but they're really from companies that may not even be in the state. In addition to misrepresenting their location, these companies sometimes also add extra fees and up prices to make extra money. And, when the flowers are received, they may not be of the best quality. One thing that makes such deceptive practices over the Internet particularly troublesome is that regulations prohibiting such activities are difficult to enforce because online shopping involves interstate commerce and federal laws. In addition, it's quite difficult to track some of these companies and make determinations about which ads are legitimate and which aren't. Unfortunately, companies that use false ads and links are well aware of how easy it is to trick the average consumer and how difficult it is to enforce regulations when it comes to the Internet. So, how can you protect yourself and ensure you're truly purchasing flowers from your local florist? One thing you can do is to be sure you know the exact website address of your favorite florist. Next time you stop in to your local flower shop, ask your florist for the shop's website address and write it down for future reference. It's also a good idea to work only with florists who have professional affiliations with organizations like the Society of American Florists (SAF). These florists are committed to excellence and are concerned about providing their customers the best quality for their money. SAF, in fact, recently called a meeting of its Retail Council to discuss how deceptive Internet marketing affects florists. The meeting resulted in the creation of a task force that will look at what the issues really are and look for ways the issues can be handled in a positive manner. With just a small measure of precaution, the next time Pamela Anderson places an online floral order she can be sure that the flowers she's ordering are coming from exactly the florist she believes they are. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers, a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
