But after its all been said and done, it appears that American Idol actually produces quality singers who go on to collect prestigious musical awards, such as the Grammy and perhaps even the Oscar. The music that comes out of the show, as a whole isn't exactly mind-blowing stuff, but this is nothing new. American Idol is simply the pop-music machine firing on all cylinders, churning out pop star after pop star. It is more about the success of pretty faces than sheer talent. For the most part, the contestants can actually sing, even if the songs aren't all that special, but there's craft there for sure, and it's worthy of attention in its own right. A Grammy nomination is a huge accomplishment that former American Idol contestants have achieved. The show has shaped some amazing stars in the likes of season four winner, Carrie Underwood, who was nominated for four Grammy's following her Idol days. The winner of season one, Kelly Clarkson, won two Grammy's after American Idol. The American Idol machine is so powerful that many people come out as winners, even if they weren't voted the winner. For example, Jennifer Hudson, who came in seventh, won an Oscar for "Dreamgirls." Chris Daughtry, despite a fourth-place finish on Idol, went on to release a number one CD. Had it not been for American Idol, it might have taken many years before anyone would have discovered Daughtry's immense talent. But will American Idol ever produce stars of the caliber of Aretha Franklin or Bob Dylan? Well, so far that has not been the case, yet many stars have been created thanks to American Idol. A handful of each season's contestants churn out CDs that sell and draw attention. The annual tour fills stadiums across the country. Numerous contestants find ways to stay in the public eye, even after the show has ended its season. It is a noticeable phenomenon that a personality with Idol roots progresses much faster than other aspiring talents. A good example is Hudson and her breakthrough role in Dreamgirls. There is no telling if they sort of success would ever have found her if it wasn't for American Idol. The way American Idol impacts the music industry has to do with how it encourages audience involvement. The fans drive music sales, and Idol taps into that aspect of the industry. Also, Idol generates a forum where musicians who would have otherwise spent years spinning their wheels, can get heard by the masses. For the music industry, TV exposure can make the difference between modest success and screaming success. And when it's on the scale of American Idol, the audience you can reach is amazing. The historical times when the music industry has evolved by leaps and bounds all had to do with technological advancements. Examples of the influence of technology on growth in the industry include the advent of the radio, or when MTV and VH1 began playing music videos. American Idol almost delivers that same sort of change. It is allowing the general public to play a role in molding and creating a star. The reality format, mixed with music and fame, make American Idol a revolutionary show. The influence that American Idol has in the music industry is the fact that it gets the music heard. The viewers get to see and hear people with difference backgrounds and tastes of music. The genres might be different, but talent is talent no matter how you look at it. And the numerous Grammy awards that former Idols have won are helping establish some good credentials for the show. It's getting harder and harder for music snobs to deny American Idols' cultural importance. The turning point for Idols' credibility may have been the success of Clarkson's sophomore album, which contained smash hits like "Since U Been Gone" and the ballad "Because of You," which garnered her critical acclaim and made her a bona fide success apart from Idol. But as Idols like Clarkson, Underwood and Fantasia continue to carve out their own niche in the music world, it is becoming evident that American Idol isn't just trying to create one type of marketable performer, but rather someone who can get recognition from the Grammy's and from critics. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Trent Lampe writes about entertainment and its impact on the world. Hands down, American Idol has been one of the most profitable and influential shows on television. Some pundits and commentators reflect that American Idol is bringing out the worst America has to offer, while others say that it reflects the best of America. Who is right?
