Copyright (c) 2007 Aiyana Rayne Successful Office http://www.SuccessfulOffice.com Myspace.com, "a place for friends" is unfortunately a place for people such as pedophiles, murders, rapists, kidnappers, and other people who most people wouldn't want to consider a friend; but the scary part is, you never know which one of these people have places right there on your "friend list". This popular, free internet site provides people with an opportunity to fully express themselves through a page which allows them to be creative and decorate using pictures and all sorts of things. It also offers free personal blog journals which people post their thoughts and feelings, and can choose to share them with others. Overall, it is an extremely fun place to chat with friends, meet new people, find old friends from grammar school through college and chat more frequently with friends and family who live a great distance away. Most people who use the site do not give out any personal information, however, with some information that people provide, along with pictures, it wouldn't be too hard for another person to find them if they wanted to. The personal pages on myspace are networked to provide links to other people's personal pages. There is also space for a person to put their favorite people and their links on their page; referred to as a "top 8" (or the choice of a top "4","8","12","16","20",or "24"). Usually this is where you could find a person's close friends and relatives; which may link a person to even more information about a person. There is an option which allows a person to either make their page private or allow the public to view it. When a page is listed as private; unless you are already listed as one of those people's friends, an accepted invitation to be a friend is the only way the page can be viewed. Myspace can also be a useful tool for police to locate criminals and find out illegal dealings; since people have a tendency to bare their souls on their pages. There are people who post pictures of their illegal guns and other paraphernalia that would help assist police officers with arrests. Sadly, many parents do not know about their children using myspace. The site has a rule that states a person must be 14 years of age or older to create an account; but there are kids as young as 9 years old who have a myspace account. Many of these children are not responsible enough and list personal information about themselves as well as explicit content that would shock their parents if they were to find out. Other parents find myspace to be a useful tool in monitoring what their kids are doing and also what their friends may be doing. Child molesters and pedophiles can make much use of this site as well. It can do the majority of the work for them and make their attacks as easy as shopping online. Many detectives go on myspace posing as young children in order to capture some of these disgraceful people. Other's go on to pose as kids and test other kids see how far they will go as far as giving out personal information. Myspace can be used as a personal marketing tool, as bands and other music artists find it as a great way to showcase their talent. Just as you never know who you will run into on myspace in a negative aspect, you never know who you will meet. There are thousands of celebrities and scouts who also use myspace, which may help an unexpected opportunity fall into a person's lap. There are both many positive and negative sides to myspace, and it can definitely be a wonderfully useful and exciting place for friends to hang out online. However, it can be extremely dangerous if it is used in the wrong way. Many people expose themselves and other things that they will most likely not be proud of in ten years. Parents definitely need to monitor their children on myspace as well as any other internet site while they are online. The site has been responsible for bringing steamy affairs between people to the light of lovers; broke up many relationships, and put a strain on long-term friendships. Still in all, some people love myspace.com so much that they'd prefer to spend a Friday or Saturday night indoors in front of their computers as opposed to going out. The famous "Tom" has been cursed out many-a-time for doing site updates in the middle of the day or in the evening when most people want to get online. Of course during these site updates myspace is "temporarily undergoing updates, we'll be back up and running shortly". Those are without a doubt the most dreaded words of true myspace addict. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Written by: Aiyana Rayne.
