Countdown Of The Top Ten American Idol Recording Contracts

American Idol Unauthorized
http://www.idolunauthorized.com

The list of former American Idol contestant's album sales,
dramatically shows the commercial success that has been shared by
many of the hit TV show's alumni. It is becoming evident that
any associations with American Idol can mean an increased level
of success. Although there is no guarantee that being a
contestant on American Idol leads to recording sales success,
many music executives are taking note of how much influence the
show has on music. In-fact, many music labels are doing
everything within their power to have their artists or their
songs featured on American Idol.

The beauty of American Idol is the commercial success that seems
to follow those who take part in the competition. The key to
their success lies in the built-in fan base that American Idol
performers are able to establish as a result of the national
television exposure. In turn, American Idol winners such as
Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson have had tremendous success
in their album sales.

Of the American Idol alumni, the top seller thus far is Kelly
Clarkson, the original winner of the show. Her total sales stand
at 8.2 million, with her debut album Thankful selling 2,510,720
copies and going double platinum. Her sophomore album did even
better with 5,700,000 in sales and six-times platinum.

And so it becomes evident that it is not only American Idol
contestants that can benefit from the shows exposure ability.
Canadian singer Daniel Powter got to see this first hand when
American Idol producers started using his song "Bad Day" as a
send-off for departing contestants. Powter's song, which had
done fairly well in Europe, suddenly got a huge boost in American
sales with multiple weeks at No. 1.

Carrie Underwood, the season 4 winner ranks second among American
Idol contestants with 4.92 Million in sales from her debut album
Some Hearts which was certified five times platinum.

The 30 million nightly viewers that American Idol draws do not go
unnoticed either, with more record labels hoping to place their
artists on the show and the Idol producers having their choice on
what performers they would like to feature on the show. American
Idol winners have their CD's distributed by Sony BMG's RCA
Music Group.

Clay Aiken, the season 2 runner-up has seen the third best
success based on record sales, with 4.53 million copies sold. His
debut album Measure of a Man sold 2,742,989, with his Christmas
album Merry Christmas With Love selling an additional 1,292,998
copies. Aiken's third album A Thousand Different Ways has sold
502,000 copies.

The obvious commercial power of American Idol means that anything
that takes place on the show has the potential attracting
out-of-this-world sales. Although it hasn't been determined
exactly what kind of contestant's performance will generate a
sales spike, the likelihood of this happening is reason enough
for labels to want their songs heard on American Idol. For
example, when Idol Chris Daughtry sang rock band Fuel's
"Hemorrhage (in My Hands)," sales of the digital single soared
to more than 17,900 copies the following week, up from just over
1,100 the week before. After Fuel saw Daughtry's influence on
their sales, he was offered the role of lead singer for the
group.

Fourth is Ruben Studdard, the season 2 winner with 2.42 million
in sales. His debut album Soulful pulled in 1,780,823. Fantasia
Barrino, the season 3, winner sits in fifth with 1.98 Million in
sales. She is followed by Chris Daughtry, the season 5, 4th
placer who has sold 1.71 Million with his debut album. In seventh
is Bo Bice, Season 4, runner-up with 833,746. Taylor Hicks comes
in eighth. The season 5 winner has a total of 658,564 in sales,
edging out Josh Gracin, season 2, 4th placer who comes in with
646,500 in sales. Rounding out the top ten is Kellie Pickler,
Season 5, 6th placer with 441,973 sold.

As we round out the top 10 American Idol performers, one thing
becomes clear. Yes, American Idol winners can pretty much count
on good CD sales going forward. But sometimes, the American
public prefers the voice talents who did not win the crown;
evidenced perhaps by the two Idol winners who have been outsold
by people they had eliminated in the competition.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Trent Lampe writes about entertainment. Hands down, American Idol
has had a strong influence on the music industry and its stars.
However, some people would have us believe that the American Idol
is rigged, propelling the less talented to the top, while the more
talented are removed from the show. American Idol unauthorized is
an uncensored view into the world of American Idol behind the
cameras. In-depth, candid interviews with contestants and
expert commentary laced with good old-fashioned juicy
gossip make this a behind-the-scenes exposé not to
miss! Buy the DVD today: http://www.idolunauthorized.com
and discover the truth for yourself.
