The 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event Day 1A held at the RIO
casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 6th, marked the beginning of
what has become known as the largest poker tournament on earth.
Harrah's who owns the World Series of Poker (WSOP) decided to
add another three days to the schedule on June 30th making it
even bigger. Jack Effel who is the WSOP tournament director,
stated that the extra days would help to provide a comfortable
experience for all players who wish to enter. Comfort is
appreciated given the $10,000 per person entry fee for this
tournament. Now Day 1 will be split up into four segments, Day
1A, 1B, 1C and now 1D with Day 2 split into 2A (1A + 1C) and 2B
(1C + 1D). Each segment will give the WSOP the capacity to handle
3000 players daily for a maximum total of 12,000 players. If this
number is realized, then it will eclipse the 8,773 WSOP
attendance record set last year for the 2006 Main Event.

All players will be given $20,000 in chips to start with to play
on levels lasting 120 minutes each. The goal for each player in
the Amazon room is to last 6 levels a day and survive. The prize
pool size, total number of entrants and payout schedule can't be
accurately calculated until all phases of Day 1 are complete. But
one fact is solid and that is all have their eyes fixed on a
bracelet featuring 136 grams of 18-carat white gold set with 120
diamonds that will go to the champion of the Main Event. The
money is not bad either as 2006 Main Event winner Jamie Gold
received $12,000,000 USD for first place. Playing in the Main
Event is not as easy as what the world sees on ESPN and the World
Poker Tour. In fact, less than 10 minutes after Day 1A began, the
first bustout happened when a player got pocket Aces, went all-in
and had them cracked by someone else who had A K. Seated in
today's field were a number of the game's top professionals
such as WPT announcer Mike Sexton, Amarillo Slim, Bobby "The
Owl" Baldwin 1978 Main Event champion, Haralabos Voulgaris, Mark
Vos, Ram Vaswani, David "The Devilfish" Ulliott, Dewey Tomko,
Arnold Spee, John Spadavecchia, Doyle Brunson holder of 10 WSOP
bracelets, Jose Rosenkrantz, Liz Lieu, Mel Judah, World Poker
Tour champion Alan Goehring, Michael Mizrachi and Marcel Luske.
And comedy relief was provided by Brad Garrett and Ray Romano
from the "Everybody loves Raymond" television series.

By 10:30 p.m., the official player count was released as 1,287
for Day 1A. This seemed to be quite a bit short of the record
setting 2,138 entrants who came to the tables in 2006 on it's
Day 1A. As play continued, there were plenty of bad beat stories
going around the Amazon room with more and more bustouts taking
place. If you were there, the most lengthy ones begin with, 'I
had pocket Aces and...', accompanied with looks ranging from sad
to angry. Some of the big names who are no longer in this
tournament round are Victor Ramdin, Blair Rodman, Jerri Thomas,
Mickey Appleman, Perry Friedman, Michael Mizrachi, Gabe Thaler,
Alan Smurfit, Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson who were both looking
for an 11th bracelet to tie Phil Hellmuth. Phil now holds the
record for the most WSOP gold bracelets (11 of them) and number
of cashes (63 in total so far at time of this writing) than any
player on the face of the earth. Ray Romano was not able to
outlast Brad Garrett at the tables and settled a $2,000 wager
with Brad. Brad stated that the money will be donated to an
agreed upon charity. The tournament round ended at 4:00 a.m which
made for a long 16 hour day with 450 players that will move on to
Day 2A.
