Officials said they have approximately 1,600 that have pre-registered for Day 1C. So more than likely the numbers for this year's Main Event will not come close to the 8,773 total players in 2006. The dip in the numbers is highly related to the fact that Harrah's did not allow online poker rooms and online casinos to send their players to the Main Event or any other event in this years WSOP. In the past few years, online poker rooms and casinos have sent hundreds of winners of satellites tournament they have given to the Main Event. But it does not seem to have dampened the overall quality of people in the Amazon room. Seen at the tables were talk-show host Montel Williams, Hollywood personality Norm MacDonald, 1983 Main Event Champion Tom McEvoy, 1986 Main Event Champion Berry Johnston, 1995 Main Event Champion Dan Harrington, 1998 Main Event Champion Scotty Nguyen, director and writer Nick Cassavetes, Howard Lederer, Scott Fischman, Annie Duke, J.J. Liu, Sam Farha, Captain Tom Franklin, David Williams and his mother Shirley Williams. And of course ESPN cameras were everywhere to be seen. Upon trying to get into the Amazon room, 2006 Main Event winner Jamie Gold did not have his seat card and was stopped by security. After some talk, Jamie had to point to the huge poster of him as last years champion for some form of identification. Eventually, he was allowed inside by security to get a new seat card. There were a lot of surprising hands and bad beats that took place in the Amazon room. For example, on one hand European player Simon 'Aces' Trumper got the majority of his chips to the middle and ended up with a full house by the river. Unfortunately, his opponent had 4 Jacks to win the hand. Shirley Williams won a big pot after her pocket 10's turned into quad 10's, crushing the other player's pocket K's. A really bad beat happened at a different table as three players saw a flop of 7h 5h 3h. Two players went all-in with the third player calling it. After the turn and river cards were dealt, one player had a king high flush, the next player had an Ace high flush, but the last player had 6h 4h for a straight flush busting one player along with crippling a second to rake in a $64,000 pot. Another first at the WSOP was the entry of Jason Holbrook who was allowed to play legally blind with the help of an aide at his side. Even though he was eliminated, his determination to return next year to play in order to win the bracelet was inspiring. It was also clear by the expressions on everyone's faces that he had earned their respect before leaving the table. At 4:00 a.m. play for Day 1B was completed. Some of the 589 names that will move on to the next round are Scotty Nguyen with 135,000 chips, David "The Dragon" Pham 130,000, Cliff 'JohnnyBax' Josephy 124,000, Berry Johnston 113,000, James Van Alstyne 88,400, Kido Pham 85,000, WSOP bracelet holder Mark Seif 70,000, Robert Mizrachi 70,000, Tom McEvoy 65,000, Matt Matros 57,000, John Hennigan 56,000, Shirley Williams 45,000, Joe Hachem 45,000 and Montel Williams 15,000. Montel played rather well today and at one point was the chip leader for Day 1B. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Howze is a webmaster of an Internet site that relates to the (http://www.justgambleforfree.com/world-series-of-poker.htm) 2007 World Series of Poker events, updates and results news and (http://www.justgambleforfree.com/Events1thru5.htm) 2007 WSOP Reports on the tournament events themselves. --- END ARTICLE --- Get HTML or TEXT Copy-and-Paste Versions Of This Article at: http://thePhantomWriters.com/free_content/db/h/main-event-day-1b.shtml#get_code .....................................
