Veale Veale Safety http://www.vealesafety.com Self-defense pepper spray is a natural chemical compound formulated by extracting oils and residues from several varieties of HOT pepper plants. These raw extracts are refined, concentrated and combined to produce different percentages of pepper that represent the heat they produce when the liquid comes in contact with skin and mucous membranes. The formulations are called OC(Oleo Capsicum) sprays and are the most accessible defense sprays available to the general population. There are at least forty brands in various sizes, spray patterns and strength concentrations. Top Five Tips To Protect Yourself Using Pepper Spray: 1. Develop a heightened sense of focus on your surroundings. You must know when to be ready with your pepper spray and you must know when to actually deploy your spray on an attacker. Because of our increasingly violent surroundings, the key is to learn to focus on attacks by predators at those times in everyday life when we are even a little vulnerable. Being isolated is by far the most common of these times. When jogging alone or going to your car in the parking lot start to pay attention to who is nearby. Who is watching you? 2. Have your pepper spray accessible but always out of site. If you have to search for it, you lose. Surprising the assailant is critical to your success. Have your hand on your spray unit in your purse with the safety off. If you use a belt version, flip it over so you can draw it out rapidly. Protect the spray from being taken away by the assailant; always keeping at least two arm lengths between you and them. Never show fear and never run. 3. Never, ever turn your back on a predator even after you spray attackers. Back away while holding the spray on the creep and be ready to repeat spraying as often as you may need to. Continue backing away until you reach safe harbor. Only after you reach safety, call the Police. 4. At home, you need to practice scenarios with different pepper spray types and sizes so you become fully comfortable in the use of each. A spray pattern goes further but needs to be aimed at the face. A fogger will not go as far but can be effective in putting up a wall that the attacker must go through to get to you and will likely breathe in the irritant and cause coughing fits. 5. Timing of defense spray use is critical to success. You never pull the spray out when you see the assailant coming toward you. This is IMPORTANT. Have it ready, unclip it, with the safety off and ready but do not point until you are absolutely going to deploy it. The goon may have a weapon of his own and you do not want to alert him that you have protection as it may cause him to react and escalate the attack. YOU NEED THE SURPRISE ELEMENT. In Summary: You must understand by now that there is a lot more to using defense spray than simply point and shoot. Your objective is to be ready to use the spray full in the attackers face and stop him before he can react or even think. OC pepper Sprays are not expensive. Buy several and with testing determine what will protect you the best. One of the best things you can do is raise your non-shooting hand and shout, "STOP" or "HEY", as loud as your lungs will allow. This will create a momentary diversion that will allow you to raise your shooting hand up and aim the spray over your outstretched arm and hand. Your accuracy will be better and your hand in front of your own face may prevent some backlash from the spray. How Pepper Spray Puts An Attacker Down: * OC pepper spray is an inflammatory agent and not an irritant like man made chemical defense sprays. This is very significant because a person sprayed with OC has two things happen to them immediately. * Instantly, the attacker's eyes will clamp shut and clamp shut HARD. Even if the person can get their eyes open, vision is very distorted as the OC opens up the capillaries of the eye and causes a temporary blindness. * Uncontrollable coughing spasms are the second major and instantaneous effect of a spray to the face of an attacker. These effects are harsh enough to bring even a large assailant to their knees. The cause of this temporary but VERY debilitating condition is due to the total inflammation of breathing tissues, which will restrict all but life support breathing. * Using OC spray is the equivalent of putting up a brick wall between victim and attacker. The person sprayed will stop what they are doing and stop what they are thinking - PERIOD! It has been said by long time law enforcement professionals "It's like being hit with a flame thrower." No matter how drunk or how high or how psychotic, the effect on the creep is the same. * Because it is a natural plant derivative, pepper spray wears off in about twenty to thirty minutes depending on concentration and weather conditions. The attacker makes a complete recovery with NO long-lasting harmful side effects. OC spray is nontoxic, non-carcinogenic and has never been found to harm skin tissues in available concentrations. You will need to determine what concentration will work best for you and what pepper varieties were used in making a particular OC spray. The heat generated by OC sprays is measured in Scoville Heat Units (SHU's) and all peppers have different SHU values. Regular bell peppers have zero SHU's while Jalapeno peppers have approximately 5000SHU's. Habenaro peppers, on the other hand, have SHU's in the 250,000 to 300,000 range. Certainly, a 1% concentration concocted from Habenaro peppers is way more powerful and effective than even a 10% formulation from Jalapeno peppers. You will need to ask questions concerning what your 10,15 or 18% OC pepper spray is formulated from and what the SHU value is. Many sprays are a combination and are very effective. By finding this information out you will be able to make a better decision regarding which one to purchase. Until next time, stay safe but take logical steps toward your goal. The first step you take is the hardest but you can soon become very well educated and savvy in almost any circumstance you might find yourself in. --------------------------------------------------------------------- My name is Gerry Veale and I will educate any reader with weekly articles on Personal Safety that explain how to use all the tools of the trade; the most important being our common sense.
