Of course, it's pretty hard to think of December without thinking of Christmas. Which brings me back around to the poinsettia. The poinsettia has become so closely associated with the Christmas holiday that any flower shop you walk into in December is sure to be filled with poinsettias in a wide variety of colors. But, have you ever seen a 12-foot tall poinsettia tree? If not, you just may need to visit Paul Ecke Ranch in Encinitas, California. Paul Ecke III grows the gigantic poinsettia trees each year around Christmas time. And, like a lot of things in California, they're larger-than-life, ranging from eight to twelve feet tall. They're a lot like California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger-huge! About four years ago, Ecke got it into his head that it might be fun to present one of his enormous poinsettia trees to the equally enormous Schwarzenegger. Finally, in 2006, Ecke got his chance when he, his wife, three of the trees, and many of his regular-sized poinsettias attended the governor's Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Ecke said of his plan to present the tree, "I thought it would be fun to present him with one of these pumped up trees. He's the big, tough guy, and these are larger-than-life trees." But, it wasn't just presenting the tree that Ecke was after; he also wanted a picture. "I wanted a picture with him, that was my goal," Ecke said. "I like his politics...I am very pleased that he has been so supportive of farmers and ranchers in California." After years of attempting to go through his local politicians to meet the governor, he finally got a call straight from the governor's office. They wanted him to provide the poinsettias for the tree-lighting ceremony. After weeks spent communicating back-and-forth with the governor's office, Ecke finally received his official invitation and a chance for his photo opportunity. "It was one of those special nights for horticulture," Ecke says. "He and his wife are very charming people."
