Okay, I don't really know what kind of plants Clay Aiken
favors when he gives houseplants as gifts, but given the
popularity of the peace lily, it's pretty likely that he's
given or received one or two in his lifetime.

The peace lily, or spathiphyllum, is commonly given as a
gift because it's a beautiful, flowering plant that is also
easy to care for. Its leaves are dark green and can grow to
as large as one foot long. It comes in more than 35
varieties, with 30 of them native to Central and South
America. Other species can be found as widely spread around
the globe as Malaysia, Costa Rica, and the Philippines. It
does best in darkly shaded, humid tropical rainforests.

The flowers of the peace lily are perhaps its most easily
recognizable feature. They resemble tiny white hoods (called
spathes) as from a jacket surrounding a little,
creamy-colored, elongated head (called a spadix). Peace
lilies can grow to be quite large, from 1.5 to 4 feet in
height.

As long as you keep the soil moist-but not too wet, peace
lilies are fairly easy to care for. They should be placed in
areas with bright, indirect light with temperatures of 65 to
90 degrees Fahrenheit. Though the plant can survive in lower
light, it won't bloom as frequently or copiously as it can
in brighter lighting.

The two major pitfalls for the peace lily are too much water
and too much sun. Although the peace lily does require a
good deal of water, proper drainage is important to keep the
plant from becoming waterlogged. Fortunately, the peace lily
is very good at telling its owners when it's in need of
water. Watch for the plant to droop slightly, then water
it-you'll see it quickly return to its formerly perky state.
However, if your plant sits in a very bright or warm area,
it may droop late in the day even if the soil is still damp.
If you notice frequent drooping, be sure to check the soil
before watering. You may wish to move the plant to a more
suitable area.

If Clay Aiken is in the market to purchase a peace lily for
someone he cares about, it's a good idea to visit a florist
to do so. Florists can help their customers choose healthy
plants of good quality and provide care tips to keep them
beautiful and green for a long time to come.
