But what do you get her? You're not sure of her size and you're pretty sure that any clothing item you'd pick out would be all wrong anyway. She's got plenty of bubble bath, a library full of books, and her taste in music is beyond your comprehension, so a CD is out. You're in luck, though. Your florist has the perfect solution-flowers! The fact is, Mother's Day is one of the busiest holidays for florists because flowers are the perfect gift for any mom-yours, your spouse's, or your own wife. In terms of flower and plant purchases, Mother's Day is second only to the Christmas and Chanukah season. Flower and plant purchases for Mother's Day total a whopping 22 percent of total purchases throughout the year. Of those flowers, 64 percent are purchased by men. And, of course, 94 percent are bought as gifts with 6 percent being for the purchaser herself. Here's where those floral gifts are going: * Mom is getting 56 percent of them. * 23 percent of them are bought for a spouse or significant other. * 17 percent are for a relative. * 4 percent go to friends. Okay, so now you know that flowers are the way to go for Mother's Day, but that leaves a lot of questions still unanswered. Do you get fresh flowers, a potted plant, or something for her garden? If you choose a potted plant, should it be a flowering plant? Here are a few statistics that might help you make those decisions as well. * Fresh flowers comprise 45 percent of floral and plant purchases for Mother's Day. 41 percent are mixed flowers, 33 percent are roses, 10 percent are carnations, 2 percent are orchids, 1 percent are chrysanthemums or daisies, 1 percent are lilies, and 12 percent are other types of single flowers. * Bedding and garden plants are 37 percent of the purchases. 15 percent of those are geraniums, 15 percent are impatiens, and 12 percent are petunias. The remaining 58 percent are other varieties. * Flowering and green houseplants make up 18 percent of Mother's Day purchases. Of the flowering houseplants, 12 percent are azaleas, 5 percent are African violets, 5 percent are lilies, 3 percent are chrysanthemums, and the remaining 75 percent are a variety of other plants. If those statistics still leave you wondering what kind of flowers to get, keep in mind that flowers are generally universal. Almost everyone loves flowers, regardless of the kind or color. And, your florist can help you choose the perfect floral gift for the mom in your life-even if that mom is you! --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers (http://www.wesleyberryflowers.com), a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
