If he's like the majority of men, the answer is, "Yes!" In surveys conducted by the Society of American Florists, men indicated they do enjoy receiving flowers. In fact, 60% of men responded that they would enjoy receiving flowers for occasions such as Valentine's Day. And why not? When you receive flowers, it shows that someone cares about you. Flowers are an excellent way to recognize someone for the special place they hold in your life, for a job well done, or for a kindness they've shown you. Although men sometimes experience emotions in a different way than do women, they do have them and they do appreciate feeling special. If you're uncertain of which occasions are appropriate for sending flowers to the man in your life, think about when you've seen him send flowers either to you or someone else. If he sends them for birthdays, think about sending flowers to him on his birthday. Or, if he sends them as a thank you, send him flowers to thank him for a great night out or something he's done for you. And then again, often the very best reason for sending flowers is for no reason at all! Just like women, men enjoy surprises, too. It can be difficult to choose flowers for a man. You certainly don't want to send him something that will be seen as too feminine. Such a mistake wouldn't likely make him feel special-it would probably embarrass him. Research has shown that men respond to visual stimuli and like bright colors like vivid yellows, oranges, and reds. In terms of arrangement styles, they often like contemporary styles as well as natural ones that incorporate twigs, grasses, and greenery. If you're really leery about sending a flower arrangement, think about sending a flowering plant. Some popular flowering plants are: * Geraniums: These flowering plants actually come a few varieties. They have scalloped leaves and the flowers grow in clusters. They're available in red, pink, salmon, orange, magenta, purple, white, and bicolors. They should be placed in an area with direct sunlight, watered when the soil becomes fairly dry, and fed monthly. * Zygocactus or Christmas Cactus: This plant is an attractive cactus year round, but is especially beautiful around the Christmas season when it bursts into bloom. The flowers hang from the tips of the branches and have many petals. They're available in lavender, purple, pink, red, and white. The Christmas Cactus should be kept in bright indirect light. The soil should be kept slightly damp. While the plant is blooming, it should be fed every two weeks. * Orchid: There are over 17,000 orchid varieties. The orchid often appeals to men who like contemporary styles because of its unique look. Typically the flowers grow on long stalks that stand well above the leaves, giving it a linear appeal. Talk to your florist about the types of orchids available and what will grow best in your area. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers, a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
