Bayview Blossoms was awarded the Ontario Mainstreet Accessibility Award in December, 2006 as recognition for the ease with which disabled customers can move about the 800 square foot shop. What makes the award even more special is that owner Ni No Wong didn't consciously plan her store with an award in mind. Before becoming a florist twelve years ago, Wong worked at the YMCA and it was her work there that gave her the idea for her store's floor plan. Wong says, "That spirit [at the YMCA] of always being inclusive and responsible stuck with me." Wong had her floor plan in mind when she opened the store, which is located across from a senior center and in a neighborhood that is home to many young people. "I'm lucky I did not have to make major changes to the store," she said. "I just thought about the wheelchairs and strollers in our neighborhood." In addition to leaving adequate space between displays for wheelchairs and strollers to move easily through, Wong also placed a dining room table in the center of her store. The table is easily accessible for people in wheelchair and allows them to sit comfortably to peruse merchandise. Wong also makes sure there are chairs available for older customers who rely on canes and walkers to get around. That way they can rest a bit while they shop. The open design of the store isn't just good for her disabled customers, Wong says she likes it better, too. "Too many florists try to jam too much into their shops," she says. She compares those cluttered shops to obstacle courses and says they're hard to shop in during busy holidays. If former Canadian Pamela Anderson is ever in the neighborhood of Bayview Blossoms she just may want to make a stop in for a dose of airy, open shopping for beautiful flowers, even if she's with a disabled or elderly friend. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers (http://www.wesleyberryflowers.com), a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
