If you had to pick one thing that you consider to be absolutely essential to everyday life with your child, what would that be? A. Hug and say, "I love you." Everything you do and everything you say is important for the life of your child. The younger your child is the more major the effect is on his/her growth and development. While all experiences throughout life continue to shape one's future, those that happen during the first five years have the biggest impact of all. Repetition and Familiarity In addition to the quality and timing of your child's experiences is the importance of the quantity. If something is done or said once or twice, it plays a role. However, if it is repeated often, it is likely to make a lasting impression. Your every action and your words are all teaching lessons. Changing the Dynamics Much of today's life is about things... what we buy for and give to our children. Where we take them is meaningful too. While this kind of outer input is important, suggested is to change the focus by adding interactions that promote growth from the inside. We can do this by what we do, what we say, and how we teach. It is the way to build inner strength. American Heart Month February is American Heart Month as declared by the American Heart Association. The symbol of the heart is used by the association to remind us about good health. Nutrition plans, activity routines, and sleep schedules form the basis of healthy living. Whole natural food, hands-on interactive play, and bedtimes provide positive input for young children and adults alike. The American Heart February 14th is Valentine's Day. In that context the symbol of the heart reminds us of love. Parents get many special gifts and cards for their children on this day. While there is much to buy and give to children, it can also be helpful to remember that a simple hug along with a powerful "I love you" can often be the best loved gift of all. A Painted Heart Pictured here is a painting of a heart that was chosen by the Cape Cod Chapter of the American Heart Association to be their image for the next two years. It was painted by a young woman Cynthia Goldberg, a resident of Mashpee, MA. On the healthy side, she walks and works out daily. On the loving side, she values her friends and family. Whether you choose to focus on health along with the American Heart Association or on love in the spirit of Valentine's Day, or both, I wish you and your family the health and happiness that go with them both. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sally Goldberg, Ph.D., is a professor of education at the University of Phoenix and parenting specialist.
