When Columbus discovered the pristine beaches of Costa Rica the
only thing he wanted to find was GOLD. Because of shipping
charges gold was the only substance that warranted plundering a
continent for. Queen Isabella was so disappointed by her share of
the revenue that Chris spent some precious time groveling in her
dungeon.

By the 16th century, Spanish Conquistadors had discovered and
developed silver mines in Mexico, Bolivia, and Peru. These New
World mines were so rich in silver that South and Central America
became the largest silver-producing areas in the world. Spanish
galleons raced across the ocean to keep royalty riding on a wave
of prosperity. Other royalty, in England especially, was so
envious of Spain's self-sustaining supply of "pieces of eight"
that war was declared.

Privateers soon discovered that an easy road to knighthood lay in
bringing galleons home to Mama. At the same time, buccaneers were
labeled "pirates," rogues, knaves and even outlaws because they
didn't turn their silver in for a knighthood when they came
home. They used up thousands of pounds of silver for such
mundane purposes as buying up rum after bringing it home.

Silver is even more valuable today than it was when Long John
Silver clumped the buccaneer decks to seize his share. Silver
dollars and one pound sterling are just copper-clad jokes today
but there are so many uses for silver besides the creation of
jewelry that production can't possibly keep up with demand any
longer.

That's good news for anyone who has invested in silver jewelry
in the past, and for those buying silver jewelry today. The price
of silver is not going to decline any time soon.

Back when Kit Carson was a baby, artisans from the Navajo and
Hopi tribes took an easy route to showing off their wealth by
simply sewing silver dollars into their dresses, vests and other
costumes. Then they discovered how easily silver jewelry could be
sold to the trading posts.

One of the best ways to grab great bargains in silver jewelry is
to buy directly from skilled artisans. In Gallup, New Mexico some
of the upper-class restaurants provide their guests with added
value to their dining pleasure by encouraging silversmiths to
show their best wares from table to table. Even world-class
artisans like the Burnsides family appear there occasionally.
Negotiating the already bargain prices is permitted.

If you aren't familiar with silver values you may do better at
Tanner's Trading Post. As family fortunes change some items that
were made before the very early 1900s are just now being sold
there (and other posts like Garcia's) for the first time. Taos
(New Mexico) is also world famous for its huge displays of all
varieties of Native American jewelry.

The one major drawback for Native American silver jewelry is that
the market is limited. If you aren't especially into Native
American jewelry it would make far more sense to seek out the
large importers and manufacturers of jewelry, like Fashion Penny
dot com. Companies like this keep their volume high by welcoming
wholesalers and distributors. Find those companies that keep
their minimum orders low and you, like any other serious buyer,
can take advantage of the power-buying strategies usually
available only to professionals. The variety is so wide that you
can easily specialize in niches that are uniquely you with very
little effort.
