Flowers Help Us Celebrate Special Occasions

Flowers have always been a special way to celebrate a special
occasion or simply to remind someone that you are thinking of
them. Your kind thought will be especially appreciated if you
put a little extra time and thought into what kind of arrangement
you will send.

There is little point in sending red roses to someone who
doesn't like roses. Nor does it make sense to send heavily
scented flowers to someone with a lot of allergies. Men tend to
like robust flowers and some men are so wary of receiving flowers
(or so they'd like us to believe!) That you might be better off
choosing flowers that are quite masculine, such as proteas,
alliums or sunflowers. Plants or a dish garden could also be
considered more masculine.

These can be accented with fresh cut flowers placed in water
tubes and added into the foliage. The occasion can then be
highlighted by adding a Mylar balloon that says "Happy Birthday"
or "Congratulations" or whatever the theme may be. It can even
cover "Just Thinking Of You."

To continue in a masculine theme, wrap loose fresh cuts in brown
paper and tie with raffia or a brown satin ribbon.

If you have a more flamboyant friend, take layers of different
colors of tissue paper, with each one visible, and wrap around a
bouquet of flowers that might include a dazzling mixture of
several different kinds of lilies and other mixed jewel-toned
flowers. Keep in mind the style and color of the recipient's
home; this will help you choose the appropriate flowers and the
right color scheme for your gift.

If you want a feeling of understatement, wrap a wide piece of
lace around a bunch of flowers, them tie it firmly with satin or
velvet ribbon.

The Elizabethans used to give posies, called tussie-mussies,
which included everything from their gardens and hedgerows, from
leaves, herbs and twigs to seed heads, grasses and flowers. If
you want you use old fashioned plants, you could choose from
roses, pinks (which the Elizabethans called gilly flowers),
rosemary, cornflowers, lavender, mint, summer snowflakes,
Jacobs's ladder or aquilegia to create a posy to gladden
anyone's heart. Your florist can help you choose the perfect
flowers for just such a bouquet.

Tied posies are also beautiful. Gather the flowers in your hand,
putting them in the position they will have in their container,
until you are happy with the posy. Tie the ends of the stems
together firmly with garden twine, then trim the ends of the
stalks to the same length and wrap the posy in cellophane or just
tie with some lovely ribbon. Your gift will be remembered long
after the flowers are gone.

If having a bouquet made by your florist, consider bringing in
your own vase. Successful arrangements of flowers often depend
as much on your choice of containers as the flowers themselves.
Fortunately, the days are long gone when vases were stiff formal
things into which flowers were placed at unnatural angels and
seemingly against their will. Containers can now be anything
from enamel bowls to tea pots, as well as classic vases, and many
items that usually are found forgotten at the back of your
kitchen cupboard or dining room buffet. Having flowers arranged
in a special and different container will add to the uniqueness
of your gift.

It's fun to build up a collection of vases and containers for
your flowers. Try to include various shapes sizes and colors and
adapt them to your changing needs. Glass vases are indispensable
but also try pressed glass, painted porcelain, cream jugs, terra
cotta bowls, baskets and carnival glass bowls.

There should be some reason for putting the container with the
flowers: you may have a vase that exactly matches the coloring
of a particular flower, or you might want to fill a small blue
and white jug with small blue and white flowers. If you choose a
vase that contrasts with the flowers, make sure it doesn't
overwhelm them.

As the school year draws to a close, there are teachers, tutors,
sitters, and all kinds of people who have helped our kids
throughout the school year. We all know that teaching is one of
the most important jobs there is and one of the lowest paying
jobs there is.

Sending in a posy or other small gift of flowers, will brighten
any teacher's day! Perhaps a neighbor has helped out by
watching your children after school, sending them a gift of
flowers or a blooming plant will let them know how much it means
to have them around for you and your family.

Graduation parties are just around the corner too! Your florist
can design a great centerpiece for your graduate's food table.
It can even have a theme incorporated into the design. Floral
designers are full of ideas and love to help you with unique
ideas and style that will enhance any occasion.

So, collect your ideas and spend some time with your florist.
You will be amazed at the many ideas they can create that will
make any occasion extra special.
