Around the country people held ceremonies, special church services, and donned red, white, and blue to show their pride in America and the heroes of 9/11. Many florists did their part, too. Some florists added small personal touches to their services while others said, "We remember" in larger ways. Around the country people held ceremonies, special church services, and donned red, white, and blue to show their pride in America and the heroes of 9/11. Many florists did their part, too. Some florists added small personal touches to their services while others said, "We remember" in larger ways. The ways in which florists commemorated the date were varied. Some florists, like Everyday Flowers in Tustin, California added special graphics to their web sites. Everyday Flowers added a banner that said, "We will always remember Sept. 11, 2001" and displayed a photograph of the Twin Towers as they appeared before the attacks. In Medford, New Jersey, Richardson's Flowers gave each customer who walked in their shop a white rose tied with red, white, and blue ribbon and a card that read, "We will never forget." The store's bookkeeper, Robyn Carter, said that customers were "very grateful and a little bit surprised." She said the shop, which is only two hours from New York City, "just wanted to do something to commemorate the day." In Hollywood, Florida, Flowers For You, Inc. thanked local firefighters and policemen for their hard work by passing out 75 bud vases to those who were on duty on Monday. The flowers came with a note saying, "To our heroes, our first-responders, thank you for all you do. Proud to be an American." Children in a class taught by the shop's owner Lorrie Rivera helped to put the vases together. Each vase contained two red roses, some greenery, baby's breath, and blue ribbons. Rivera explained, "We had a friend who lost his son in Sept. 11." The gift was much appreciated by those who received them. Rivera reported that one of the people who helped to deliver the vases told her that one fireman broke out in tears when he was presented with the flowers. Rivera said, "He was really touched by it. They don't get enough recognition for what they do." Daryl A. DePottey, vice president of Natural Nook Floral and Gifts, Inc. in Detroit Michigan, has been commemorating the day every year since the attacks. Each year he hands out 3,000 bouquets to people driving by his store. That number corresponds to the approximate death toll of the attacks. Each bouquet includes a note that says, "Never Forget! Never forget the innocent victims and their families. Never forget the countless heroes who went above and beyond. Never forget the resilience of our nation. Never forget to be proud you're an American." Thousands of Americans helped remember the attacks of September 11 by viewing Nicolas Cage's starring role in World Trade Center, and we in the floral industry are proud to have helped countless other Americans to "Never Forget!" too. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers (http://www.wesleyberryflowers.com), a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
