No Flowers For China In Wikipedia

If you look up China on Wikipedia.com you won't find mention of
flowers as a major export for China. But, that may change if the
Chinese government is successful in its efforts to boost the
country's cut-flower industry.

The government's efforts are largely aimed at improving the
financial situation of one of its poorest areas, Yunnan Province,
which is located quite a way from China's coastal areas. There,
The New York Times reported in a recent story, workers are paid
"as little as $25 a month [to] clip roses from huge greenhouses,
take them to vast sheds to remove any thorns by hand, and wrap
them in paper and plastic for shipment." To help improve the
flower business in Yunnan Province, the government is building
new roads, bridges, and airports as well as offering
interest-free loans specifically for building new greenhouses. By
doing so, they hope to increase the export of roses, which
command a high value per pound of flowers.

The deputy chief of China's Flower Association, Li Gang told The
New York Times, "Our plan is to become the biggest flower
producer and exporter in Asia in 10 to 15 years." Doeke Faber,
chairman of Flower Auctions in the Netherlands and president of
the International Association of Horticultural Producers seems to
believe in China's potential as a major player in the world's
flower industry as well saying, "Certainly they are the sleeping
giant. They have excellent climate and very cheap labor."

Though China's efforts to boost its cut flower exports are
commendable, they won't go unchallenged. China doesn't
presently have enough refrigerated storage areas or trucks.
They'll also face major expenses to fly flowers to faraway
markets. And, there are challenges from the international floral
industry, too. China produces flowers that fall within a wide
range of grades, but they don't produce a great deal of premium
roses because there have been disagreements with rose breeders
over royalty payments. In addition, some people in the industry
believe that China is violating international trade rules with
government subsidies. Furthermore, they're concerned that
China's inexpensive flowers could cause an overall decrease in
wholesale prices.

Only time will tell if China's bid for a place in the worldwide
cut flower market will be successful. If China does meet its
goals, we're likely to see some changes in the flower industry,
such as price changes and maybe even some new flower
varieties...and an update on Wikipedia, too!
