In addition to the Christian tradition of celebrating the
Christmas holiday, many African American families also celebrate
the cultural holiday of Kwanzaa. One notable Kwanzaa celebrator
is Oprah Winfrey, who has frequently offered tips and ideas for
the holiday on her television show and in her magazine. In
addition to Oprah's tips, your florist may also be able to help
you choose great flowers to accent your Kwanzaa decorations and
entertain your holiday guests.

Kwanzaa began in 1966 when it was founded by Dr. Maulana Karenga
who created the holiday as a way to celebrate African American
values, like family, responsibility to the community, commerce,
and making self-improvements. Kwanzaa celebrations usually
include at least a few of these rituals, dialogues and
narratives, dancing, singing, poetry, drumming, music, and, of
course, feasting.

Kwanzaa was founded on seven principles called Nguzo Saba. Those
principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and
responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and
faith. To symbolize these principles, a candleholder called a
Kinara is displayed. The Kinara holds seven candles""a black one
in the center, three green on the left, and three red on the
right. Kwanzaa is celebrated December 26 through January 1, and
on each of those days a candle is lit, beginning with the center
candle and then the rest from left to right.

To help make your Kwanzaa celebration beautiful and memorable
this year, call your florist and ask for arrangements using the
traditional Kwanzaa colors. You might ask for an arrangement that
includes fruits and vegetables to be placed around the Kinara.
Red and green flowers placed throughout the room will help to
accent the Kinara placed in a prominent location.

If you plan to throw a Kwanzaa celebration and invite guests to
your home, be sure to take full advantage of areas where candles
can be displayed, such as along walkways, among fresh flowers and
greenery placed laid along a mantle, and floating in crystal
bowls along with large flower blossoms.

Oprah Winfrey is known to be a big fan of flowers, so she and her
favorite florist will surely find beautiful and ingenious ways to
place flowers throughout her home as part of her Kwanzaa
celebration.
