Lindsay Lohan's Peers May Choose Floriculture Careers

Article Description:
====================

Unlike actress Lindsay Lohan, most twenty-something-year-olds are
spending a great deal of time thinking about career choices.
Though Lohan has been acting for many years now, friends she grew
up with who are not in the entertainment business are in the
midst of their college education years or are beginning jobs in
the "real world." With the millions of career possibilities out
there, it can be very difficult to decide which path to take. One
path available to Lohan's peers is a career in the floriculture
industry.

Lindsay Lohan's Peers May Choose Floriculture Careers

Unlike actress Lindsay Lohan, most twenty-something-year-olds are
spending a great deal of time thinking about career choices.
Though Lohan has been acting for many years now, friends she grew
up with who are not in the entertainment business are in the
midst of their college education years or are beginning jobs in
the "real world." With the millions of career possibilities out
there, it can be very difficult to decide which path to take. One
path available to Lohan's peers is a career in the floriculture
industry.

Floriculture, as the word implies, literally means, "to
cultivate flowers." While that may lead you to believe that the
only job available in the industry directly involves growing
flowers, that's simply not the case. There are, in fact,
numerous options available ranging from flower production, to
design, to retailing, to engineering, to running the business
end-and several more positions in between! The variety of jobs
available isn't really all that surprising when you consider
that there are almost $20 billion in floral sales every year.
Generating sales in that amount takes the hard work of many
people.

Floriculture careers are generally divided into five key areas,
each of which incorporates several job positions. Those key areas
are:

 * Commercial Grower.
 * Floral Wholesaler:
 * Retail Florist.
 * Other Segments.
 * Research.

Commercial Grower

Within the United States there are thousands of commercial
growers, and 94 percent of them have sales in excess of $100,000
annually. Jobs within this area include, owner, production
manager, plant breeder, propagator, technology specialist, sales
and marketing manager, sales representative, and delivery/truck
driver.

Floral Wholesaler

Floral wholesalers act as the go-between for local growers and
retail floral customers. There are several thousand wholesalers
in operation in the U.S. today. Jobs within this area include,
business owner/executive, general manager, buyer, sales person,
technology specialist, wholesale floral designer, shipping and
receiving, care and handling specialist, importer,

Retail Florist

In the U.S. today, there are around 25,000 retail florists. These
are the shops that consumers looking to purchase flowers and
floral goods visit. They may sell seasonal items and decorations
in addition to floral products. Jobs within this area include,
owner, management, floral designer, care and handling specialist,
business office, and delivery.

Other Segments

This area covers many of the jobs that are essential to the
floriculture industry, but don't fit within the other areas.
Jobs included are, botanic garden staff, high school or college
instructor, floral design instructor,
gardener/horticulturist/landscape architect, hard goods,
horticultural therapist, importer, industry sales representative,
mass market/supermarket floral, publications and communications,
scientist, and wire services.

Research

The research area offers exciting careers in the scientific field
involving the study of plants and plant materials. Such research
is a great asset to the continued growth of the floriculture
industry.

So, should Lindsay Lohan ever find herself looking to switch
careers or in a position to give career advice to one of her
peers, perhaps she'd be wise to point in the direction of the
floriculture industry career path. With so much variety
available, there's something for everyone.
