Copyright (c) 2008 Jon M. Stout Element H2O http://www.elementh2o.com Many cities do... And if you live in one of them, you could be at significant risk for infectious as well as chemical contamination of your drinking water. In the U.S., only 55,000 community water systems supply water to 90% of the population. When pipes become old and encrusted with debris and parasites like Cryptosporum or bacteria like Campylobacter and Shigella, purification by chlorination becomes impossible. These nasty bugs in your water supply can lead to diarrhea, vomiting even spontaneous abortions in pregnant women. Thousands of viruses, including the dangerous Norwalk virus, also exist in the vast majority of drinking water systems. Many of these viruses escape commonly-used water treatment methods. How many of them end up in your drinking water? Then, of course, there are the tens of thousands of synthetic chemicals produced since the end of WWII. Giant industries have dumped untold tons of waste material into lakes, rivers and streams, polluting groundwater. Likewise, modern farming methods have utilized billions of pounds of pesticides, herbicides and artificial fertilizers, polluting surface and ground water on an unprecedented scale. No one even realized that there was a problem until biologists started observing large numbers of dead fish, fish with tumors or mutations, and fertility problems in animals exposed to these pollutants. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Jon M.
