Some Rose Trivia For Madonna

In writing her children's book titled The English Roses, Madonna
may have done some research. But, did she uncover these facts
about roses, one of the world's most treasured flowers?

 * Egyptian Queen Cleopatra's palace is said to have been
carpeted in rose petals.

 * Confucius had his own library of books on how to care for
roses-there were at least 600 rose books in it!

 * Shakespeare's writings refer to roses more than 50 times.

 * The world's oldest living rose, still growing on the wall of
the Hildesheim Cathedral of Germany, is believed to be 1,000
years old!

 * Roman mythology says that white roses bloomed where Venus'
tears landed as she grieved for her son Adonis.

 * Another Roman myth holds Cupid responsible for the thorny
stems of roses, saying that he accidentally loosed an arrow into
a rose garden when he was stung by a bee. The arrow caused thorns
to grow. Later, when Venus walked through the garden and her foot
was struck by a thorn, it is said that her blood turned the roses
red.

 * New York's state flower is the rose.

 * Legend has it that a Roman beauty named Rhodanthe was so
sought after by a multitude of amorous suitors that she sought
hiding in her friend Diana's temple. Diana became jealous of the
attention Rhodanthe was receiving, so when Rhodanthe's suitors
broke down the door, Diana turned Rhodanthe to a rose and her
suitors to thorns.

 * A vibrant orange-red rose bears the name of a well-known
country music singer and songwriter-Dolly Parton.

 * Greek Mythology holds goddess Aphrodite responsible for naming
the rose.

 * Rose hips have more vitamin C than almost any fruit or
vegetable.

 * The rose is the National Floral Emblem of the U.S.

 * French explorer Samuel deChamplain is credited with bringing
cultivated roses to North America.

 * Fossilized roses dating back 40 million years have been
discovered.

 * Josephine, the wife of Napoleon, grew more than 250 varieties
of roses.

 * June is National Rose Month in the U.S.

Perhaps it is the rose's gorgeous bloom that has captured the
attention of people throughout the ages, or maybe it's the
myths, legends, and history of the flower that keeps us
interested. Whatever the case may be, Madonna was wise to choose
roses for the title of her book-if she's fortunate, her book
will remain a part of our culture for as long as the rose has.
