He was the owner of the biggest little business in town. Every week the same ad ran in the local paper: Get your oil changed by a friend. Joe changed the oil and greased the chasis for lots of friends. That afternoon his best friend, Bill, walked in Bill's face was grim, determined. Joe, I thought I was your best friend, but we can't be friends any more. I had to come to let you know why. There was something devastating in the way those words came out. Joe sat down and watched as his friend Bill brought out a stack of those little stickers that went on car doors back then and go on windshields now, the kind that help you see when it is time to change your oil. Bill had a stack of them, one a week, going back for more than three years. Bill had been a friend for a long time. I depended on you. You knew that I drive constantly, mostly on lonely mountain roads. I trusted you to take care of me. The front U-Joint went out on my car yesterday and the garage called me down to look at it this morning. That U-Joint was as as dry inside as a case of gun powder. It had not been greased in a long time. Every week you gave me the old sticker and put on a new one that told me that told me that YOU, not one of your hired hands, had changed my car's oil and greased its chassis. Your signature was on the line and I trusted you. Bill took the latest oil sticker out and ripped it to pieces. Then he picked up the rest of the stickers and walked out. Joe remembered that zerk on Bill's car. It had been so hard to get to, and after a while he hadn't even tried. Joe got out his keys and shut the little shop down, never to open again. Joe went driving on a lonely mountain road and at midnight he found himself looking down through the trees of a shaggy bluff. Joe sighed miserably. People think friends are the most important possessions on earth. Integrity is much more important than friends. Self respect is a thousand times more important than integrity. Joe got out and walked home. He never went back for the car. These days there isn't even one zerk to grease on most cars and it is always easy to get to. People don't even think about the chassis getting greased when they take their vehicle in for service. Integrity in greasing isn't important any more, some people say. They never look at their oil stickers. Estampeinc.com has sold thousands of oil change stickers. The company believes that when it comes to servicing your car, integrity is more important than ever because the things that still need professional attention are more critical than ever. Motors still burn up if the coolant level drops too low. Cylinder walls still get scratched to shreds if the air filter gets clogged. Your car could plunge off a cliff on a sharp bend if the brake fluid falls short and air gets into the system. The professionals you choose to service your car should take care of it as if service was important enough to demand their integrity and guarantee their self respect. Professionals will check your engine coolant, inspect your air filters, verify the level of your brake fluid, and add washer fluid for free if your car needs it. Then they'll proudly place an oil change sticker on your car like it was a guarantee stamp that they HAVE done your work to professional standards and above. The most popular variety of oil stickers provided by Estampeinc.com go on the windshield now, right where you'll see it when you get in the car. It doesn't get in your way when driving, but that little reminder sticker should serve up a subliminal reminder to see if professional service is needed every time you get behind the wheel. It really is important. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Malcolm Uffelman offers Oil Change Reminder Stickers (http://www.estampeinc.com/oil-change-accessories.html) through Estampe, Inc.
