Across the US, many police departments are issuing the TASER® to officers. Now this TASER® is available to the general public in most states. Invented in 1969 by John H. "Jack" Cover, former chief scientist of North American Aerospace's Apollo Moon Landing Program, the first TASER® used gunpowder and was classified a firearm by the ATF. The word, TASER®, is an acronym inspired by Victor Appleton's book called Tom Swift and his Electric Rifle. The M18L TASER® uses compressed carbon dioxide to fire two barbed probes that can penetrate the skin through up to 2 inches of clothing. After each firing, the TASER® cartridge must be replaced. It is designed to be replaced quickly, should the TASER® need to be fired more than once. Unlike older models by TASER®, the M18L protects the user by more than just causing pain as the previous guns did. It completely disrupts the individuals Central Nervous System (CNS) by administering 50,000 Volts, 18 Watts and 133 MilliAmps for a five second duration. Wires from the gun are connected to the probes. No subject has ever been able to overcome this nonlethal electrical force once the probes have successfully penetrated the skin. The shape and operation of the M18L TASER® is similar to that of a pistol. If you are approached and have reason to fear for your safety from an attacker, remove your TASER® from the holster and make sure that it is loaded with a TASER® cartridge. If the subject continues to approach, place the ambidextrous safety located in the upper rear of the TASER® to the ARMED position. Once you press the trigger, the TASER® will fire. The laser will appear where you point the TASER®. Point it at your attacker's torso or legs. Sometimes seeing the laser will make people think twice. Shout out the appropriate verbal commands and tell them to Get away. Sometimes it is possible to deter an attacker with the laser and yelling. The range on the ML18 is 15 feet. Before you carry your TASER® make sure that you know how far that is. If you fire at someone 16 feet away, the wires on the electrodes will not reach. Once your attacker is within 15 feet, if you still fear for your safety, make sure that you hold the gun vertical, then fire. The barbed probes the TASER® fires are in a vertical alignment and if the two do not strike your attacker, the electrical circuit is not completed. A five second burst of electricity will completely incapacitate your attacker. If you wish to stop before the five seconds is over, return the safety from ARMED to the SAFE position. As soon as your attacker is down and you can safely get away, call 911 and tell them where you are and what happened. When firing your TASER®, remember that the top probe follows the laser and the bottom probe proceeds at an 8 degree angle from firing until it reaches your target. That equals about 1 inch beneath the upper probe every 7 feet. Avoid firing at the head, face groin or throat. The more muscle tissue you can hit the more the attacker will be immobilized. If you fire the TASER®, miss, and the attacker rushes you before you can reload, the front of the M18L TASER® has exposed metal electrodes that you can press against the attacker and deliver the shock with. To do this, switch the TASER® to the ARMED position and pull the trigger when you are making contact with the assailant. TASER® International recommends that you apply the stun gun to the side of the neck, upper chest, forearm, outer thigh, calf or pelvic triangle aggressively to stun the nerve bundles of your attacker. Remember, using the TASER® in this manner only shocks your attacker when it is firmly pressed to them. This TASER® is designed to be nonlethal, however, unknown factors, such as the attacker falling down after being zapped, or if the TASER® probe hits an eye, can cause additional injuries. The TASER® is designed for protection from human beings and is calibrated for a nonlethal disruption of the human nervous system. Animals possess different types of nervous systems and it is not recommended that you use it on anything but human attackers in a lawful manner of self defense. The M18L operates on 8 AA batteries. TASER® International recommends Duracell® Ultra alkaline batteries or Energizer® Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries. Never mix the rechargeable batteries with standard batteries. Every six months, perform a spark test on your M18L TASER®. To do this, verify your TASER® has the safety switch in the SAFE position and make sure that the TASER® cartridge is removed from the end of the gun (never perform a spark test with the cartridge inthat would cause your TASER® to fire its probes.) Make sure that you have your TASER® pointed away from you and your fingers are away from end of the TASER®, then place the safety switch to the ARMED position and pull the trigger. It should spark for one second (depending on how long you hold the trigger). Return the safety switch to SAFE. While you have the TASER® armed, examine the power indicator LED to determine if you need to replace your batteries. The M18L is ideal for home protection and myriad law enforcement needs. TASER® International performs a background check on each purchaser. You will be linked to that TASER® just like a firearm. It leaves Anti-Felon Identification Tags (AFIT) each time it is fired. If you sell your TASER® make sure you have all the contact information for the buyer. If it is misused the authorities will come looking for you. Check with your state and local authorities about the laws regarding your TASER®. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Aeden Alexander has been writing about self-defense and safety for ten years.
