According to two separate reports, more Americans are choosing plastic trees over fresh, live trees. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service reported that sales of authentic trees hit their peak four years ago at $517 million, and an ABC News/Washington Post poll indicated that 58 percent of people in the United States purchase fake Christmas trees. However, that still leaves a good deal of Americans buying real trees. According to Bachman's, the biggest family owned flower retail in the U.S., they still sell a greater number of live trees than artificial ones. But, in terms of dollars, the artificial tree sales beat out the real tree sales. Paul Bachman, of the Twin Cities based Bachman's, says, "The trend in recent years has been that unit sales of fresh trees have remained fairly steady." The increase in purchase of artificial trees may be due to the reduction in price and better quality. Also, artificial trees are now available pre-lit, so many people who already owned artificial trees that they had to string their own lights on are switching to the convenience of an already lit tree. Not only are they spending less time stringing lights, but they're also saving money on energy costs since some of the pre-lit trees 20 percent or less of traditional Christmas tree lights. The good news is that you can add some of nature's real beauty-and the scent of pine-to your home even if you do opt for an artificial tree. Your florist can help you choose the perfect flowers and fresh greenery to accent your home décor. Ask for a centerpiece that uses fragrant pine boughs, pinecones, and seasonal flowers that complement the colors of the room. You can also drape doorways with fresh ropes of pine that will give your house that gorgeous Christmas look and smell. And, if you're hosting the family Christmas dinner this year, your florist can design napkin rings using fresh flowers and greenery. So, should Hilary Duff decide to go with an artificial Christmas tree this year, her first call should be to her florist for fresh, beautiful, fragrant flowers and greenery to make her home a warm and welcoming holiday feeling. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley Berry is member of the American Academy of Floriculture (AAF) and President of Wesley Berry Flowers (http://www.wesleyberryflowers.com), a successful multi-million dollar floral business that was established in 1946.
