See TERMS OF REPRINT to the end of the article. Article Description: Roger Daltrey has been inappropriately maligned throughout his career. He's the front man for one of the greatest rock bands of all-time, The Who. Yet when names are tossed around as to who is the greatest lead-singer in rock and roll history his name never seems to come up. Why is that? Copyright (c) 2009 Ryan Hogan Best Show Tickets Las Vegas http://www.bestshowticketslasvegas.com/ Roger Daltrey has been inappropriately maligned throughout his career. He's the front man for one of the greatest rock bands of all-time, The Who. Yet when names are tossed around as to who is the greatest lead-singer in rock and roll history his name never seems to come up. Why is that? Part of the reason is he's overshadowed by guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend. Pundits tend assume that if Townshend had a better voice, especially during the early days of The Who, Daltrey would have been out of the band. The second reason, Daltrey was "just a singer." Apart from a few songs, Daltrey didn't write any of The Who's music. Critics tend to deduct points from singers who "just sing songs." Reason number three, neither The Who nor Daltrey ever took themselves too seriously. That's a sin in the larger than life world of rock gods (and bombastic rock critics). Still, The Who were just as "artsy" and just as "heavy" as any of their contemporaries. They just didn't wear it on their record sleeves. The fourth reason, Daltrey fronted the wrong band. Critics never seemed to care too much for the "un-cool" Who. Their popularity amongst fans far outstripped the veneration they received from critics. The Who wasn't hippie enough for the 1960's and not glam enough for the early 1970's. And finally, Daltrey is a blonde. If you notice most of the so-called great front man sport mops of dark hair (minus David Lee Roth, of course). Okay, maybe that has nothing to do with it, but at times Daltrey's shaggy blonde curls did overshadow his powerful voice. Regardless of whether he's in or out of some hypothetical conversation, Daltrey is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, one of the greatest lead singers of all-time. Daltrey is still fronting The Who only now it's him, Townsend and a world class backup band. So while Townsend didn't feel like touring in 2009 Daltrey did. So instead of staying at home, the blonde singer decided to come to America and sell some Roger Daltrey tickets. This will be Daltrey's first solo tour since 1985. He's calling his outing "The Use It or Lose It Tour." The title is indicative of Daltrey's positive outlook on performing after 45 years in the industry. He's resigned to the fact that there aren't many years left for him to rock and roll. The Who will be back, but until then Daltrey needs to keep his voice in shape. The crooner says that in between tours he needs to get out and sing "to keep my voice in trim, so I'll be ready. Those songs demand a lot of voice!" "Use It or Lose It" kicks off on October 10th in Vancouver, B.C. and is scheduled to conclude November 30th in Clearwater, Florida. "I thought it'd be nice to play smaller, more intimate venues. I look forward to getting back to that." "I feel so passionate about Townshend's music, what he wrote and his standing in the big scheme of things," said Daltrey. "I love playing Townshend's music old, new, whatever." In addition to Who classics, Daltrey will perform some obvious and not so obvious covers as well as songs from his solo career. By the way, Daltrey's biggest hit (in America) was 1980's "Without Your Love." His biggest hit in the U.K. was "Giving It All Away" from 1973. Don't worry, we've never heard of them either. While Pete Townshend won't be on this tour, his younger brother and guitarist Simon will. Look for Daltrey and the other "Townshend" to rock cities across America.
