-- New Yorkers need not be alarmed if the streets
are blanketed with cops if a war with Iraq is declared, Mayor Bloomberg said
yesterday.
The mayor said the NYPD's elaborate plans for increased visibility - dubbed
"Operation Atlas" - are nothing new.
"Most of the things they are doing during Operation Atlas, they are doing
today, they did yesterday, and the day before," Bloomberg said. "You want to
make sure that people understand, see and feel comforted by a heavy police
presence."
The plans call for cops armed with submachine guns and armored gear to be
stationed around the five boroughs with random sweeps for explosives at
mass-transit hubs. Hundreds of extra cops will be on hand at places of worship,
landmarks, tourist attractions and hotels.
The price tag has been estimated to hit $5 million a week, primarily due to
overtime costs. The NYPD operates on a $3 billion budget annually.
"We're not dictating how much security to provide by how much money we have,"
Bloomberg said.
