BRUTAL BRUNO COMES OUT FIGHTING AT TEACHER MEET
March 19, 2003 -- ALBANY - Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno had some advice yesterday for teachers fighting to restore education budget cuts: "Take a plane and go and fight" in Iraq. "You want to fight? There's plenty of fighting that's going to go on within the next 36 hours," Bruno told 1,000 members of the United Federation of Teachers, protesting Pataki's plan to slash $1.2 billion in education spending. Bruno, hearing grumbling from the crowd, continued, "This is a time for unity, this is a time for togetherness." Later, Gov. Pataki warned lawmakers the state's already severe budget shortfall may worsen if America goes to war. "It was not kind of a pleasant discussion," said a grim-faced Bruno after the closed-door budget meeting with Pataki and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan.)
 "The governor was continually expressing that the ramifications of what is happening internationally can create some additional downward pressure on the revenues, which makes the [budget] situation even more difficult to deal with," Bruno said. "The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms
is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in
government."
