WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is willing to work out sanctuary arrangements for Iraqi President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) if he shows signs of interest in an offer of exile, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday. The United States has given Saddam until 8 p.m. Wednesday to leave the country. The senior State Department official, who asked not to be named, said: "If Saddam took the offer, if there was a serious proposal to go somewhere, I'm sure we'd be willing to work out these sorts of conditions and arrangements." He was referring to arrangements on safe passage and immunity from prosecution for crimes he has allegedly committed over the past 24 years. "But the fact is that he's shown no indication of willingness and no response to these offers. He's refused these proposals from Arab countries," the official added. The official did not guarantee immunity for Saddam and his retinue, however, saying the United States could not decide on that alone.
